The Michael Hooker Proteomics Core facility provides services for the analysis of proteins from tissues, cells or other biological samples. We are available to the UNC community, as well as external customers worldwide. We’re committed to educating students and researchers in the field of proteomics and will work with you from initial experimental design through publication.

We offer an array of sample preparation and instrumentation services, as well as method development and in-depth consultation to help researchers optimize their experimental design. The facility is equipped with four state-of-the-art systems: a Sciex 5800 MALDI-TOF/TOF, a Thermo Easy nLC 1200- QExactive HF, a Thermo Easy nLC 1200-QExactive HF Biopharma and a Thermo Easy nLC 1200-Fusion Lumos. We offer several services including: protein identification, protein characterization, phosphoproteomics, large-scale proteomic profiling, intact mass analysis, and protein-protein interaction analyses. We can perform these services quantitatively. Comprehensive data analysis is provided through a variety of database search engines and software packages.

Position Description

This is a 3 year, time limited position. The Research Specialist coordinates and manages storage, routine preparation, analysis, laboratory record keeping and communication of results associated with samples submitted to the UNC Proteomics Core facility.

The Research Specialist prepares collaborator’s samples for mass spectrometry analysis, which includes protease digestion, sample clean-up and other techniques. The Research Specialist will contribute to some method development to improve and standardize current operating procedures.

The Research Specialist is responsible for operation and scheduling maintenance of common lab equipment, including the Agilent HPLC fraction collector, Biotek plate reader, lyophilizer, etc.

The Research Specialist will operate the MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers, used for intact mass analysis. The Research Specialist trains users on this instrument, maintain logbooks and schedule regular maintenance for this instrument. The Research Specialist prepares reports and discusses results directly with collaborators.

The Research Specialist is also responsible for organizational aspects of the core facility, such as lab safety, sample tracking and storage, ordering supplies, and restocking supplies.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Strong interpersonal communication skills are required in order to work directly with collaborators. Strong organizational skills are required to maintain and manage records, supplies, and samples.

Ability to troubleshoot and optimize existing methods.

Ability to document processes and results in reports.

Ability to train others on lab equipment and wet lab techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with the following:

Sample preparation for mass spectrometry analysis. Preparation of protein samples using a variety of methods including protein quantitation, protease digestion, sample clean-up and other techniques.

Lab management including record keeping (lab notebooks, chemical inventory), ordering supplies, tracking and storing samples, maintaining common lab equipment.

Project planning.

Data analysis of MALDI-TOF and LC-MS data using specialized software.
