JOB SUMMARY

The Connecticut Small Business Development Center (CTSBDC) is seeking two Business Advisors (Educational Program Administrators). The incumbents will report to the Associate Director and/or the State Director and will provide counseling and advising on access to capital, management, customer acquisition, and starting a business, directly and through training programs, to small business owners and entrepreneurs, as part of a team focused on business financing needs of CTSBDC clients. A second assignment overlay may be geographic in nature, to assure a balance of CTSBDC services. This position acts as a consultant, advocate and liaison for all CTSBDC services and resources. The position will be based at the the CTSBDC Lead Office in East Hartford, CT. In-state and out-of-state travel, as well as flexible hours, will be required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical and management assistance to the small business community via traditional on-site visits, online such as Skype, WebEx, GoToMeeting, email, phone, or through other management approved methods of client contact.
  • Providing in-depth counseling and presents potential courses of action to owners of small businesses in key areas such as, overall financial management strategies and techniques, overall business strategies, business plan refinement, customer acquisition and marketing strategies including digital media, operational efficiencies and e-commerce, and funding growth and expansion plans.
  • Offering reasoned, logical advice and guidance on all matters of starting, building, and sustaining a business including a thorough knowledge of business strategy, trends, and best practices. Leveraging information and guidance from other CTSBDC advisors, host university resources, and online resources; and counseling clients on, and referring them to, other public and privately provided assistance and resources.
  • Building, maintaining, and leveraging relationships within the financing industry. Participating in events and representing CTSBDC in association meetings, as directed.
  • Working to assure CTSBDC achieves its annual programmatic goals as set by its principal funders. Working to assure compliance with all requirements of CTSBDC’s host university.
  • Conducting community outreach, client development, informational, training programs, and other activities to expand CTSBDC’s client base. Assisting in making all necessary arrangements for such programs and following up to assure stated schedules and commitments are met.
  • Working toward responding to client requests within two business days during the business week and meeting with a client in less than two weeks of the client submitting initial application.
  • In conjunction with a Team Leader, and the Associate State Director, setting goals and objectives for self-directed promotion of CTSBDC services; building and leveraging community and stakeholder organizations in order to achieve programmatic goals and advance CTSBDC’s mission.
  • Participating in SBA international trade, NEPD Core Competency, ASBDC Annual Conference, and other such courses and training programs, as required, and maintains all appropriate certifications.
  • Performing related administrative duties as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field.
  • At least five years of related work experience in a business or client service organization, including one year of experience serving as an advanced team member.
  • Strong knowledge of general business strategies and operations.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on business financial management, operations, and customer acquisition strategies and tactics.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand financial condition from review of statements and other information; ability to analyze business plans.
  • Ability to advise, counsel, and mentor individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and economic situations.
  • Ability to plan, conduct and implement client development and recruitment programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and accurately, taking initiative, exercising sound judgment when making decisions and meeting deadlines.
  • Proven experience contributing to the success of a team and working well with team members; experience achieving goals/metrics.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours and travel.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with digital communications, online meeting tools, online learning methods, and online research resources.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience with preparing and analyzing lending applications or funding proposals.
