Job Description NPR and its member stations are creating an innovative system of regional newsrooms and the newest one, in the Midwest, is focused on investigative journalism. We’re looking for a dynamic leader to help define the editorial vision for this four-state collaboration and develop a strategy for executing it. The managing editor will work with station news leaders and the regional investigative team to present impactful reporting that engages audiences on radio and digital platforms.The Midwest Newsroom aims to blend local, regional and national coverage in creative ways to reach new and diverse audiences. The Managing Editor will be employed at KCUR, in Kansas City, lead station for the collaboration. The other managing partners are NET Nebraska, Iowa Public Radio, St. Louis Public Radio and NPR. This position offers an experienced journalist the opportunity to build and lead a team that shares resources, plans coverage together and holds public officials accountable. This is also a hands-on role, so the managing editor must be able to edit audio and digital work, coach reporters and make quick decisions about breaking news. This is a three-year, grant-funded position. The Midwest Newsroom partners intend to raise funds to sustain the position beyond that period. Responsibilities:
  • Help the partner stations incorporate investigative, data-driven reporting into their journalism, including enterprise feature stories and long-term investigative projects.
  • Supervise, lead and inspire the regional newsroom staff, which will include an investigative editor and investigative and data journalists. This will include assigning and editing audio and digital stories.
  • Serve as a central point of contact for editorial leaders at the stations and at NPR.
  • Lead planning meetings and oversee a communication process that keeps everyone informed and connected.
  • Ensure stories are considered through diverse perspectives, so they are inclusive, equitable and reflect the audiences they serve.
  • Strengthen the digital journalism capacity among the partner stations and the regional newsroom and boost the visual storytelling capacity.
  • Visit stations across the region and set up regular training opportunities for station and regional reporters.
  • Help stations and NPR identify and reach new audiences through storytelling and new products on all platforms.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong leadership and management skills, including the ability to manage workers in a variety of remote locations as well as in-person direct reports.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Understanding of both on-air and digital journalism production, with some experience in both.
  • Commitment to editorial standards of accuracy, thoroughness, ethics, balance and diversity.
  • Ability to exercise sound news judgment and generate factual, error-free copy on deadline.
  • Ability to think strategically, set goals and use metrics to track progress towards meeting those goals.
  • Familiarity with investigative projects, and experience reporting, producing and editing investigative work.
  • Knowledge of the issues, cultures, people, geography and news opportunities in the Midwest.
  • Experience with and credibility in Midwest journalism and/or with NPR.
  • Experience in public media.
  • Experience leading multi-partner collaborations.
  • Experience developing new products.
  • Ability to solve problems, manage complexity and be resilient.
  • Ability to communicate concisely and effectively.
