Overview

Princeton University’s Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program is looking for a motivated and multitasking Systems Administrator with a strong background in server administration for an academic research program of some 90+ faculty, staff, researchers and graduate students.

The systems administrator is responsible for the day-to-day management of the computing needs of the department's faculty, students, researchers, and staff, and conference room spaces. This individual should be familiar with numerous technology systems, comfortable providing hands-on technical support, and focused on highly responsive customer service.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate effectively with a wide variety of constituencies, have a problem-solving mindset, and be able to handle multiple competing priorities simultaneously and smoothly.



Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the AOS Program's servers and workstations, comprised of PC's running Windows and Linux, and Mac's running OSX. Responsible for system wide upgrades.
  • Responsible for maintenance of AOS research computing on PICSciE infrastructure.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot a variety of desktop computing applications, networking applications, and information access tools in a heterogeneous environment.
  • Support of administrative desktops and laptops, both PC and Mac OSX, including installation and configuration of laptops and DeSC machines (Princeton’s OIT managed computers).
  • Provide guidance to faculty and staff on their computing purchases; install and configure all new computer systems, printers, scanners, laptops, desktops and other computing related devices.
  • Ensure systems are kept in required configuration profile.
  • Provide hardware/software maintenance and troubleshooting in support of the scientific enterprise.
  • Maintain system and user computer security and user data.
  • Create and administer user accounts and authentication server.
  • Attend monthly SCAD/DCS (Support for Computing in Academic Departments/ Department Computing Support) meetings and technical training sessions to keep abreast with technology changes.
  • Create and edit content on websites built in Drupal. Assist faculty and research staff with personal webpages.
  • Help research staff make available data to other researchers.
  • Configure and properly secure remote access mechanisms such as FTP, SFTP, SSH, VNC, and Microsoft Remote Desktop to make information and services available to research staff both on and off campus.
    Familiarity with RAID systems.
  • Update and patch workstations, deploy new software and update existing software. Maintain the security of workstations.
  • Write and update scripts to automate maintenance tasks and warn of potential problems such as crashing servers or services, or failing devices.


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 1-3 years of related work experience;
  • Expertise in Linux (Red Hat) administration; web experience with Drupal content management software; Mac OSX Catalina and Windows 10; Perl and shell scripting; Linux/Unix applications;
  • Familiarity with scientific computing software to assist researchers (ie. Python, MATLAB);
  • Experience building and configuring new computers and upgrading existing computers;
  • Experience troubleshooting networking issues; installing and configuring computing accessories such as printers, scanners, and projectors; and experience translating technical information to a non-technical audience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree as well as three plus years' related experience in an academic environment, including providing technical support to end users within a client/server operation in LINUX, MAC OSX Catalina, and Windows 10 platforms, configuring and installing networked hardware and software, and debugging.
  • Experience with virtualization and containerized applications, online ticketing systems, knowledge of LDAP administration and use of its tools, experience with clustering technologies for Linux.

The following tasks and skills that would be necessary for any person to fulfill while working as a Technical Support Specialist in the SCAD program:

stand or walk up to 2 hours at one time for 2-4 hours per day;
sit for up to 4 hours during an 8 hour day;
lift or carry up to 50 pounds occasionally (less than 33 % of the workday);
lift up to 50 pounds to chest height and up to 25 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead;
constantly use hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, computer keyboarding (more than 66% of the workday);
occasionally bend, squat, kneel, climb stairs or step ladders, reach or lift overhead, lie down, crawl, knee stand, or push or pull with forces up to 25 pounds (less than 33% of the work day);
possess ability to full range of body motions, physical agility, and ability to maintain balance.
