Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under general direction, compute, classify, and record numerical data to keep financial records complete. Perform any combination of complex and diverse calculating, posting, and verifying duties to obtain primary financial data for use in maintaining accounting records. May also check the accuracy of figures, calculations, and postings pertaining to business transactions recorded by other workers. The accounting clerk will be responsible for accounts and speedtypes to be the "eyes and ears" of the Controller's Office. This person must work in collaboration with other individuals to understand the accounting and operations of various departments/function within Case Western Reserve University.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Oversee the activity flowing through the university's speedtypes and accounts including reconciling and/ or reviewing the reconciliation of activity on a monthly basis. Follow-up on discrepancies, discuss with applicable departments any reconciling items, and ensure the proper use of the accounts/ speedtypes. (20%)Assist in supporting the cashiering functions during times of high traffic in the cashier’s office. (10%)Verify deposits and correctly apply them in the accounts receivable system. (10%)Determine when issue/ matters need to be escalated to accountants or assistant controller. (10%)Develop and propose Journal entries to correct items as needed. (10%)Monitor accounts for any potential issues/ trends and make recommendations for change or improvement. (15%)Assist in the preparation of internal briefing schedules and annual schedules for the external auditors as necessary. (10%)Answer telephone and as appropriate field questions relative to assigned duties. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    May assist with the daily operation of the department. ( <1 %)Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)

CONTACTS

Department Daily contact with departmental staff to maintain workflow.

University: Extensive daily contact with faculty and staff at various schools and departments to address concerns / problems, use, and interpret established procedures.

External: Frequent contact with various vendors, clients of the university, and periodic contact with colleagues from other institutions to furnish, obtain or exchange data or information.

Students: Minimal contact with student workers or student groups to address concerns / problems, use, and interpret established procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience. 2 to 3 years of demonstrated experience in a related field-experience to include reconciliations, accounts receivable, and various accounting functions preferred.

Education: High school education required; Associate's degree highly desirable.

REQUIRED SKILLS

    Knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Ability to use mathematics to solve problems.Excellent communication skills Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Talking to others to convey information effectively.Strong analytical and organizational skills required. Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Ability to manage one's own time.Ability to actively learn - understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem solving and decision-making.Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.Proven customer service orientation.Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work as part of a team.Accurate and detailed oriented.Ability to multi-task manage deadlines.Strong PC skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft computer applications.Experience with PeopleSoft Financials or other ERP software preferred.Ability to meet consistent attendance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical office environment. The employee will perform repetitive motion using computer mouse and keyboard to type. The employee will have to adhere to the controller's office dress code.
