The Director of Emerging Technologies is responsible for leading IN2 and its staff in providing student programming, as well as programming for staff, including faculty, and external guests, in the areas of entrepreneurship, maker/makerspace, STEM pathways, robotics and other emerging technologies.  As such, the Director ensures continuous improvement in these areas to support the mission, vision and strategic goals of the Academy.  IMSA’s 2022 vision is to be a recognized global leader and catalyst in equity and excellence in STEM teaching and learning, innovation and entrepreneurship. We believe that emerging technologies are essential elements of achieving this vision.

The Steve and Jamie Chen Center for Innovation and Inquiry (IN2) is a leading center for innovative and entrepreneurial thinking and applied STEM learning for youth and adult development. This Center provides award-winning programs, experiences, and mentoring for youth and adult projects in applied STEM fields. Its mission is to empower youth and adults through world-leading applied, collaborative, and culturally responsive experiences that inspire innovative and entrepreneurial thinking; and the launch of breakthrough projects into the world. IN2 offers programs in the areas of design thinking, business and entrepreneurship, maker and makerspace design, STEM pathways, film studies, robotics and emerging technology.

The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program, and it serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the following:

Leadership of Staff/Programming: 

  • Lead the Makerspace manager ensuring clear and measurable goals/outcomes, professional development and vibrant and best practices programming for students and staff, including faculty, in:
    • 3D Printing and Modeling Other Emerging Technology Hardware and Software, e.g. emerging technology related software and hardware (e.g. digital electronics, advanced prototyping, machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented/Virtual Reality, etc) housed in the Academy.
  • Lead IN2 Program Managers, Site Assistants and other staff as assigned ensuring clear and measurable goals/outcomes, professional development and high caliber programming related to STEM-based areas of interest.
  • Lead IMSA’s robotics team coach, ensuring team is well-trained, supported and ready for  robotics competitions.

Training:

Provide training to faculty and students related to:

  • Emerging Technology Workshops: Provide workshops for faculty and their students on emerging technologies housed in the Academy, including (but not limited to) augmented and virtual reality software/hardware, Arduino Microcontroller devices, 3D Printers, 3D Scanners, etc. Emerging Technology Training Materials: Develop and maintain a library of training materials such as video tutorials, online documentation, etc. Emerging Technology Consultations: Provide 1- to-1, and 1-to-few training consultations with faculty and their students.

Research:

Provide research consultation and assistance to faculty and students on the development and use of emerging technologies, including integration into classrooms and student projects.

Process Development:

Establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) regarding the processes associated with department.  This would include the establishment of a repository for the developed documentation.

  • Emerging Technology Catalog: Develop and maintain a database of emerging technologies housed in the Academy - including their faculty/student specific use cases SOP Development: Developing specific SOPs such as drone use policy, equipment check-in and check-out.

Some weekend and night work as well as travel within driving distance

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Master's degree in engineering/information technology or related STEM field Strong interest and 5-7 years' experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics 5-7 years’ experience in maker space, AI, VR, gaming fields in academic environments Proven ability to effectively lead and develop staff Excellent customer service skills, preferably with experience in a secondary or higher education working directly with a diverse range of faculty and students Ability to stay abreast of new and emerging technologies and share this knowledge with faculty and students Strong understanding of, and experience with, emerging technology applications Experience providing training in areas such as: 3D Printing, augmented reality, drone aerial photography, 360 Cameras, unity game design, etc. Experience providing hands-on support for 3D printing equipment and associated 3D modeling software
  • Strong working knowledge and demonstrated experience using popular 3D modeling software applications
  • Strong working knowledge and demonstrated experience using Adobe Creative Cloud applications
  • Proven ability to communicate technical concepts in non-technical language and engage a diverse educational community
  • Demonstrated ability to flex between highly creative and highly technical work
  • Proven ability to manage departmental budgets, vendor relationships, and RFP development
  • Demonstrated collaborative project management skills
  • Experience coaching and mentoring robotics teams
