Description:

A post doctoral position is available in the department of Environmental and Global Health at the University of Florida to study the molecular pathogenesis of facultative and obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens in the laboratory of Anthony Maurelli, Ph.D., Emerging Pathogens Institute and Department of Environmental and Global Health, the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.

Projects on the molecular pathogenesis of Chlamydia include: characterization of the pathway for peptidoglycan synthesis; the role of peptidoglycan in cell division; development of tools for genetic analysis of Chlamydia spp.; and identification of transport systems for uptake of nutrients essential for Chlamydia growth. Pilot projects on public health surveillance of Chlamydia are also available. Projects on the molecular pathogenesis of Shigella involve mechanisms of emergence of Shiga toxin producing strains of S. flexneri and metabolic requirements for intracellular Shigella growth. Pilot projects on public health surveillance of Shigella are also available.

Stipend and Benefits: Salary for a full-time, (1.0 FTE) is $52,704. Postdoctoral Associates are also eligible for health insurance and 5 hours of personal leave biweekly.


Qualifications:

Experience in bacterial genetics or bacterial physiology/biochemistry and molecular biology is required. Individuals trained in public health field work who are interested in studying environmental and transmission aspects of Shigella and Chlamydia infections will also be considered.
