Lecturer/Undergraduate Academic Advisor for Theatre and Performance Studies

The Northwestern University School of Communication (SoC) seeks an undergraduate academic advisor who will be responsible for advising and teaching undergraduate students in the Departments of Theatre and Performance Studies and serving as advisor for Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association’s official honor society at four-year colleges and universities. This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits eligible lecturer appointment. Salary is competitive based upon experience. Starting date for the appointment is negotiable but not later than January 31, 2021.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue on a rolling basis until the position is filled. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the undergraduate dean and a team of professional academic advisors to develop, implement, and improve processes for effective academic advising. They will also work closely with Theatre and Performance Studies faculty to support departmental goals and initiatives.

The successful candidate will advise SoC Theatre and Performance Studies students regarding course selection, degree progress, University policies and procedures, campus resources, career objectives and personal goals. They will also assist the undergraduate dean with undergraduate academic affairs, curricular programs, assessments and special projects within the School of Communication, most notably University and school-wide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, Honors Convocation, awards and Commencement activities. As advisor for Lambda Pi Eta, the lecturer/advisor will appoint student officers, engage stakeholders in community building and professional development events, liaison with the National Communication Association for membership and professional development and provide overall administrative oversight for this organization.

The academic calendar yields heavier and lighter periods of work and some evening and weekend events.

Qualifications:

• A terminal degree or equivalent experience in a performance-related discipline, student personnel administration, higher education administration, or counseling and guidance from an accredited college or university

• 1-3 years of college level experience advising and/or teaching

• Knowledge and experience working with historically underrepresented LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, first-generation, low-income (FGLI) and undocumented college students, student-veterans and students with disabilities

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a creative and dynamic environment during a time of profound institutional change.

Theatre and Performance Studies lecturer/advisors with expertise teaching literary, dramatic and performance theories, histories and works that represent BIPOC and global cultures will also have the opportunity to teach relevant courses in the Theatre and/or Performance Studies Departments.

Northwestern University’s Department of Theatre offers undergraduate degrees in Communication (BACMN, BSCMN) with a major in dance or theatre; graduate degrees in acting, directing and design (MFA); and a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary theatre studies. The Theatre department features 40 full-time faculty, approximately 400 undergraduate majors, and 60+ graduate students. Performance studies offers undergraduate degrees in Communication with a major in Performance Studies (BACMN/BSCMN); and a Ph.D. in Performance Studies. The Performance Studies department features 7 full time faculty, approximately 10 majors and 30 graduate students. Both programs are located on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus in the greater Chicago area.
