Job Description Summary

Provides primary care nursing services in day clinic and observation unit. Evenings and weekends independently provides primary care nursing in an after-hours urgent care clinic with a physician on-call. The position is part-time during fall and spring semesters. The schedule includes days, possible evenings, and some weekend rotation.

Essential Functions:

Major Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Provides nursing triage, assessment, care and documentation in outpatient clinic. Assists clinicians, administers vaccines, medications, treatments.

  • Working alone, provides nursing triage, assessment, documentation, and care in after-hours clinic according to nursing standards and written protocols with physician on-call. If appropriate care is beyond capabilities of SHS, activate the emergency response system or arrange transfer to appropriate medical facility.

  • Provides care of patients in observation unit including observing, reporting and documenting medical condition, administering medications and providing for hygiene and other daily living activities.

  • Effectively communicate with other healthcare providers.

  • Collects specimens for testing. Prepares specimens for reference lab and performs approved lab tests.

  • Performs phlebotomy.

  • Ability to operate diagnostic equipment such as EKG and spirometry.

  • Answers telephone, able to effectively triage and support patient needs.

  • Starts and monitors IV’s for hydration.

  • Provides information and instructions regarding preventive health, healthy practices, and self-care.

  • Maintains confidentiality.

  • Able to accurately document and utilize forms in the electronic medical record.

  • Correctly and accurately code for all applicable charges on the patient record.

  • Maintains quality, safety and infection control standards.

Other Functions:

  • Verifies compliance with immunization requirements.

  • Participates with other SHS staff in planning, projects, and programs such as health promotion, surveys, assessments and Division of Campus Life events.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • BS in Nursing or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • NC Board of Nursing licensure and current CPR/AED certification.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of nursing theory and standards of practice.

  • Proven skill in providing nursing assessment and treatment according to accepted nursing standards and written protocols in outpatient primary care facility.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of University records and medical information.

  • Proficiency to perform phlebotomy, intravenous procedures, collect urine, and throat swab specimen.

  • Knowledge of procedures and standards for administration of medications.

  • Ability to work independently with physician available by telephone.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills.

  • Skill in responding to telephone inquiries, scheduling, record management, supply and equipment maintenance and inventory.

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.

  • Ability to make decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with SHS staff and other University personnel.

  • Ability to document accurately and timely using the electronic medical record.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience in a primary care outpatient setting with independent nursing assessment responsibilities.

  • At least two years of nursing experience working with college age population preferably at a campus health clinic.

Accountabilities:

  • May oversee, direct, and guide work of other nursing and support staff.

  • Works independently with physician on call.

  • Licensed by NC Board of Nursing.

  • Practice complies with Nursing Practice Act of North Carolina, ANA Standards of College Health Nursing Practice, CLIA, OSHA and other applicable standards.
