This is a temporary Research Technician position available for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the laboratory of Dr. Virginia Miller, investigating virulence mechanisms used by the bacterial pathogen, Klebsiella pneumoniae. This work involves genetic manipulation of K. pneumoniae to study the function and regulation of virulence genes, molecular cloning, PCR and qRT-PCR, use of biochemical assays to assess molecular processes, and in vivo and in vitro models of disease. The Technician will assist and support the Principal Investigator in managing the laboratory and performing experiments. Lab management duties may include but are not limited to: ordering supplies, equipment maintenance, organizing and maintaining reagents and supplies, and training of new lab personnel.

The candidate will need to be capable of performing many different types of laboratory work. The candidate must be organized, reliable, scientifically motivated, and pay keen attention to detail. The candidate must have the ability to work both independently and as part of a research team.

Education and Experience

Minimum Educational requirements:
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Essential Skills:
•Relevant coursework in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Chemistry, or similar discipline (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
•Demonstration of relevant hands-on laboratory experience (1+ years preferred)
•Conceptual understanding of aseptic technique, PCR and DNA/RNA extraction
•Ability to read and follow written protocols
•Excellent computer skills, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
