Accounting Manager - Georgetown Global Health

The General Accounting Office (GAO) in the University's Office of the CFO (OCFO) is responsible for the integrity of the University's financial records and systems and for assuring that the transactions entered into the University's General Ledger are recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Accounting Policies of the University. GAO promotes the efficient use and stewardship of University resources and compliance with laws, regulations and reporting requirements through technical financial and analytical skills, and expertise in accounting knowledge.

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Accounting Manager - Georgetown Global Health (GGH) is responsible for the effective and efficient review and monitoring of cash & cash equivalents, employee advances, prepaid expenses, property and equipment, accounts payable, expense recognition and classification, foreign currency translation, and the review of the general ledger for all Georgetown University subsidiaries under the Georgetown Global Health, LLC umbrella. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger review, coordinating month end close activities, first tier review of financial statements, year- end audit preparation, and special projects.

The Manager oversees the financial reporting, compliance with internal controls, and verification of account activity and account balances on a monthly basis and monitors bank activity weekly. They also provide training as needed to GGH personnel and assist with designing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure timely, accurate, and complete accounting for GGH activities.

They work closely with management in the office of sponsored programs and the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) to ensure that pertinent data is accurately captured in the accounting system and relevant internal control policies and guidelines are adhered to.

The Manager reviews the general ledger for all GGH entities and leads the monthly accounting close process which includes preparation and/or review of journal entries and reconciliations of balance sheet accounts and preparation and analysis of monthly financial reports.

The Manager is expected to assist in the University's preliminary and year end audits, to include the review and preparation of adjusting entries, footnotes and supporting schedules. The Manager will review all ‘Prepared by Client' (PBCs) requests assigned to them. It is, therefore, imperative for the Manager to demonstrate an excellent understanding of accounting standards, AICPA policies, NACUBO guidelines and automated accounting systems.

This position requires solid accounting skills, leadership and good judgment that are critical to the department's success. The position must develop an atmosphere of teamwork with GGH personnel in other Georgetown departments, GUMC and OCFO leadership, and with GGH personnel in other countries.

Work Interactions

The manager will interact with auditors, various managers in OCFO and GUMC, GGH personnel, as well as external financial and accounting professionals who provide assistance to the University.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting is required; Master's degree in Accounting is desirable
  • Certification as a CPA
  • 8 years progressive experience in financial accounting, reporting, and audit
  • Experience working with organizations that perform on contracts or grants with the federal government; experience with organizations performing international operations is desirable
  • Advanced use of Quickbooks and Excel and other Microsoft Office tools
  • Strong technical accounting and financial expertise, leadership and good judgment
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Great attention to detail
