Department Summary
The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement, and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.

At the Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center (TAEC) students find resources and services to enhance their learning and academic performance through tutoring, classes and workshops, individual learning consultations, graduate school test prep, and supplemental instruction. These resources are instrumental in helping students fill in critical subject and skill gaps, strengthen their academic performance, and help them make solid progress toward achieving their educational goals.

Position Summary
The Writing Learning Specialist position provides direct student support and coordinates program services to help students improve their learning and enhance their academic success. This position brings expertise and leadership in the area of academic writing and learning support to guide the growth of these services within the TAEC and across campus. It specifically provides targeted support for international students through individual learning consultations and general drop-in writing support.

Specific duties will include providing consultation and guidance to students to improve their learning and enhance the quality of their coursework; teaching workshops and courses on a variety of topics; and maintaining student contact records and reporting data on program use and effectiveness. Additionally, this position is responsible for coordinating TAEC program services and resources such as the drop-in Writing Lab, Online Writing Lab, and CRLA tutor certification. The Writing Learning Specialist will recruit, hire, and supervise writing tutors in coordination with the Tutor Coordinator. This position will develop, facilitate, and plan peer tutor training, aligned to CRLA certification and program needs. Furthermore, the Writing Learning Specialist will develop and expand writing programs and services to meet student needs, narrow resource gaps, and integrate campus support.

The Writing Learning Specialist must be culturally competent and able to work with first-generation, low-income, underrepresented, international, and transfer students. The position requires skill in addressing the needs of all students, from high performing to academically vulnerable. The Writing Learning Specialist must also demonstrate respect for all individuals, welcome diversity among students and colleagues, and actively work toward an inclusive workplace.

Minimum Requirements
• Master's Degree
• One year of experience teaching in group or individual settings
• One year of experience implementing academic support and strategies to enhance student learning

Professional Competencies
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Knowledge of student learning and teaching theory and research, with an awareness of evidence-based strategies including reading, writing, note-taking, studying and preparing, test-taking, time management, and goal setting
• Commitment to, experience with, and ability to work effectively with people from a variety of diverse backgrounds and cultures in support of a welcoming and inclusive environment
• Ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team setting
• Ability to establish priorities, maintain schedules, and manage time effectively

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience teaching or providing learning support at the university level
• Experience coordinating events, programs, or services
• Formal education and/or expertise in writing, composition, or related area
