The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Naples has an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse 2 (RN 2)for the Operating Room / Perioperative Services department. The RN 2, assesses the physical, psychosocial and teaching needs of patients to determine appropriate nursing diagnosis, nursing interventions & expected outcome in the patient's plan of care in the Operating Room / Perioperative Services. Identifies patients' needs & problems & itnplenents appropriate action. Recognizes emergent/unsafe situations & initiates appropriate intervention Recognizes signs of abuse and/or neglect of infant, child, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric patient and reports finding to MD and patient representative. Obtains pertinent history from patient and/or significant other, or from other appropriate source, i.e. (Surgical / Clinical Chart). Speaks to infant/pediatric child patient in soothing tone. Works directly with physician to determine continued care of patient in the Recovery Area and to relay to the Recovery Area RN any further postop instructions. Assesses the physical, psychosocial and teaching needs of patients to determine appropriate preoperative status and define interventions necessary prior to surgery. Requests medical, pre-surgical clearances, physicals, EKG, and other necessary reports fi'om patient, primary care physician, or other related entity. Individualizes patient and family teaching needs relative to patient's ability to learn and level of comprehension. Recognizes reactions of parents/significant others to stresses and plans care accordingly for infant, pediatric, child patient.

Utilizes available resources to meet patient's educational needs, Adapts plan of care for the adolescent patient in terminology understood by the adolescent patient. Allows child adolescent patient to verbalize concerns about disease. Coordinates plan of care with other members of health care team (ie: Anesthesia, Fellows) Maintains medication cabinet inventory and assures that medications are current, dated, and correctly stored. Implements care to patients in the Perioperative Services / Operating Room. Accurately documents patient's care, intervention & change of status on ongoing basis. Responds to all medical emergencies in the faculty; initiates appropriate action. Demonstrates competency to coordinate and manage nursing care for the patient experiencing surgical intervention (aseptic technique, proper positioning, ability to prep the patient's operative site, handle specimens, and safe use of equipment). Demonstrates safe and appropriate use of supplies and equipment, protecting patients and staff members throughout surgical intervention. Participates in the transportation to and from the operating room. Participates in the stocking of sub-sterile room, OR's, and picking the supplies for the next day. Assesses the status of patients by collecting and reviewing lab work, EKG, health clearances, etc. .. Arranges transportation for patient for day of surgery as needed / requested, and contacts patients' rep when additional assistance is needed. Implements care to patients in clinical office setting based upon skill set and training as needed to assist in provision of nursing care. Evaluates progress & effectiveness of nursing intervention with the patient in the facility. Evaluates & documents patient response, change of status, effectiveness of nursing & medical intervention & medication administered* Evaluates status of patient's preoperative preparation and completion of medical chart. Performs QA of preoperative medical chart & patient preparation. Provides patient care based on established theory, nursing & hospital standards of care and practice. Demonstrates ability to care for specific patient populations related to cultural, spiritual, social, age & developmental status. Recognizes the impact of illness or injury on patient & significant others,

Follows standard precautions guidelines. Serves as a patient advocate. When outpatient chart is available, updates the patient's problem lists including allergies & systemic medications. Participates in the interviewing and selection of new nursing personnel. Orients, trains and monitors new nursing staff to ensure they are competent to perform their duties/activities. Demonstrates knowledge of & adherence to hospital and department standards & goals. Participates in QI programs. Attends mandatory in service programs. Demonstrates knowledge of departmental/hospital policies & current changes. Checks emergency supplies, when on duty and documents on check list.

Updates & Improves Clinical & Managerial Skills. Updates personal development record including competency. Attends in services & continuing education programs.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):

  • A graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a valid State Of FL. RN license.
  • Five plus years of medical-surgical nursing experience.
  • Five plus years of ophthalmology nursing experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in an outpatient setting and ambulatory surgery center.
  • Capable of handling emergencies and CPR trained.
  • OR experience
  • BLS,ACLS, PALS from American Heart Association
