The Laboratory Manager will manage COVID-19 LAMP testing as a part of the LAMP @ Rice study. The Laboratory Manager will work in a fast paced and challenging environment and will be a part of the overall mission to keep the infection rate on the Rice University campus at a manageable level by quickly identifying persons with probable COVID-19 infections. Assays performed in this laboratory will include both automated and manual testing with the goal of providing rapid results that can be used for reflexing individuals to clinically actionable COVID-19 testing. The LAMP testing conducted within this research study will contribute to LAMP assay validation, a critical step in expanding access to LAMP testing for COVID-19 testing.

This is a benefits-eligible position with an initial term of one year with the possibility of extension based upon need and available funding.

Education RequiredMaster's DegreeMajor/Discipline

Molecular biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, biology, or a related field.

Substitution for Education RequirementMay substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the education requirement.Education Preferred

PhD and/or training obtained from a formalized molecular diagnostics program.

Related research experience including the following:
- Experience as a research technologist in a biological laboratory
- Experience with RT-qPCR and pre-PCR rooms
- Supervisory/leadership experience managing several direct reports or multi-person teams

Previous experience with liquid handling robots.

Skills Preferred

- Strong knowledge of molecular biology fundamentals
- Breadth and depth on current molecular testing methodologies
- High level of proficiency with computers
- Proven ability to problem solve/troubleshoot and provide solutions under minimal supervision
- Willingness to enforce strict PPE requirements and rigorous adherence to Standard Operating Procedures
- Highly motivated and energetic with the ability to work effectively in a high test volume setting
- Able to handle sensitive health information with professionalism and confidentiality

Internal / External Contacts

- Extensive daily contact with lab technicians, graduate students, and faculty.
- Regular contact with Rice staff/administration, collaborators and vendors/delivery services
- Occasional contact with donors and visitors to the COVID-19 LAMP laboratory

Physical Demands

Requires working at a computer for extended periods of up to 8 hours per day

Working Conditions

Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Must be readily available for personal or telephone consultation.

- Manages large, specialized, complex laboratories and assists with setting up the laboratory and coordination of the long term and day-to-day technical laboratory operations
- Manages and updates all processes
- Manages laboratory budget
- Procures research materials and supplies for the laboratory, and manages the inventory
- Oversees and promotes lab safety and routine laboratory hygiene
- Maintains laboratory apparatus and equipment
- Oversees research staff and students in the lab, including technical performance
- Completes other duties as assigned

Additional Functions or Information

- Effectively manage the staffing of the laboratory and monitor the testing schedule to ensure adequate coverage and proper use of overtime; adjust as needed
- Effectively manage change, facilitate innovation and foster team-building to provide the highest quality and most cost effective laboratory operations possible
- Resolve operational issues in a timely manner by consulting with the Richards-Kortum Lab, Vice Provost of Research, Director of Environmental Health and Safety, and Vice President of Administration as needed
- Routinely monitor laboratory to maintain a DNA and RNase-free environment to prevent cross contamination and RNA degradation
