Reporting to the Director of the School of Music, the Director of Athletic Bands is a three year fixed term 12 month position that administers the entire Athletic Band program and directs the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band (POTM) as well as oversees the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Pep Bands.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding musician, conductor, and educator with an established record of national achievement in leadership of concert and marching bands. We seek an innovative thinker with strong organizational and leadership skills, who thrives in a collaborative environment, and who actively seeks to advance diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism at WCU. Finalists will demonstrate an ability to uphold Western Carolina University’s tradition of excellence and innovation in marching band programs, including student leadership development, audition and training days, Summer Symposium camp for high school students and band directors, and the annual Tournament of Champions high school marching band contest.

Responsibilities include show development & design, health and safety of students, coordination & oversight of all associated band staff, coordination with WCU Athletics, and advancing the national/international reputation of the POTM. The new Director of Athletic Bands will teach Marching Band Techniques, assist with recruitment and outreach activities for the POTM and WCU, and collaborate with the Director of Bands in the administration and advancement of a comprehensive university band program for the benefit of our students and community. Additional duties to include conducting Symphonic Band and/or assignments in music education appropriate to the candidate’s strengths and the school’s needs, as determined by the Director of the School of Music.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this PositionMinimum Qualifications

A master’s degree is required with significant leadership experience with marching bands in a secondary and/or collegiate environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Earned DMA or Ph.D. in Music. 3-years secondary school teaching experience. 5-years leadership experience with marching bands in a collegiate environment. National reputation in directing and teaching marching bands as evidenced by recognition and honors.
