General Summary:

Project REACH identifies and serves disadvantaged young people who have the potential for education at the post-secondary level and encourages them to continue and graduate from secondary school and enroll in programs of post-secondary education. High school and post-secondary dropouts are also encouraged and assisted in returning to school. The Educational Counselors provide outreach counseling to persons, including those with disabilities; and conduct workshops and training sessions for program participants, their parents, and community agencies.

Examples of Duties:

  • Conduct initial assessment and participant intake for middle and high school grade students;
  • Maintain client records and collects statistical data;
  • Provide technical assistance to community agencies;
  • Conduct individual and group counseling;
  • Conduct workshops and training sessions to middle and high school grade participants, their parents and community agencies on a variety of topics, including: Financial Aid, Making a Successful Campus Visit, Choosing Academic Majors, Service Needs at the Postsecondary Level, Maintaining Parental Involvement, Rights as an Individual with a Disability, Developing Strategies for the World of Work;
  • Maintain effective liaison with target schools serving middle and high school students;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s Degree, Masters’ Degree preferred, which includes course work in Counseling, Human Services, Special Needs or related area, and a minimum of three-five (3-5) years of experience in an urban primary or secondary school or higher education setting is required. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with low-income, first generation urban students and their families required. Ability to work nights and/or weekends, as required. Incumbent must pass a CORI and SORI background check on an annual basis.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with multi-ethnic, multi-racial population preferred.
  • Ability to conduct workshops or training sessions preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the college and financial aid application processes and demonstrated experience with academic and/or college/financial aid advising;
  • Knowledge of and experience with various administrative software programs, including Microsoft products;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with event planning, promotion and implementation;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with university and/or school personnel;
  • Experience with persons with disabilities.
