The Department of Special Education at San José State University offers graduate level programs, including three Education Specialist Teaching Credential programs for individuals who want to teach students and young children with disabilities. We also offer a Master of Arts in Special Education and the opportunity for undergraduate students to receive a Minor in Special Education.

- Doctoral degree in Special Education or related field;
- Strong ability or potential to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses addressing the California Teacher Performance Expectations (TPE’s) in the K-12 Special Education credential area of Extensive Support Needs (ESN) formerly known as the Moderate/Severe area; and
- Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.
- Knowledge about core content subject matter, including Universal Design for Learning, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), low incidence disabilities, mental health needs, and handling/positioning practices;
- Minimum of two years of teaching in Special Education K-12 settings, inclusive settings are preferred;
- Experience employing research/teaching about the intersections of disability, race, ethnicity, home language, national origin, sexual orientation, and gender identity;
- Excellence (or demonstrating the potential for excellence) in teaching and scholarship related to Extensive Support Needs;
- Willingness to examine and re-mediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support historically underserved students;
- Familiarity with performance assessments as a means of evaluating and supporting teacher candidates;
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work in partnership with closely aligned districts and diverse community partners;
- Evidence or potential evidence of external grant support; and
- Successful university level teaching and supervision fieldwork.
- Teach courses in the credential area of Extensive Support Needs particularly in the areas of curriculum, assessment and bilingual special education;
- Participate in the curriculum development and teaching of other courses to meet the needs of a graduate program;
- Prepare teacher candidates to become transformative, justice-orient educators and are capable of addressing the needs of student populations of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
- Develop and sustain an ongoing record of focused scholarly endeavors and participate in shared governance in department, college, and university committees and other community service assignments.
