The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, in conjunction with Vidant Medical Center, provides a broad range of clinical services in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology for hospital and clinic patients. The Department houses residency, cytopathology, forensic pathology, and surgical pathology fellowship programs. The mission of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is to improve the health and well-being of the citizens of eastern North Carolina and beyond by delivering high quality pathology services, by providing exemplary education for medical students, residents, and other health care professionals, and by creating new knowledge through research. As the field of Pathology continues to evolve, the Department will continue to uphold its commitment to provide the best diagnosis and treatment monitoring services to the citizens of eastern North Carolina.

Job Duties

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is seeking an academically oriented doctoral level scientist to serve as the Pathology Genomics Core Director for a fixed-term appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. This position is responsible for operations of the Pathology Genomics Core Laboratory, a new state-of-the-art facility that is the central genomics laboratory for the Brody SOM performing both conventional and advanced Next Generation Sequencing and Bioinformatics analysis. The candidate will work both independently and as part of a collaborative team to generate data from various genomics-oriented workflows and assist in the optimization and validation of new technologies and procedures.

Duties: This position will play a key role in leading change and innovation by developing and validating new NGS assays to support translational research. This position is responsible for providing management and regulatory oversight of technical operations, which includes oversight of quality control, competency assessment, proficiency testing, and instruments maintenance. The candidate for this position should be capable of carrying out studies using various molecular technologies such as whole exome sequencing (WES), RNAseq, qRT-PCR and microarrays to support pre-clinical translational studies during various stages of discovery and development. Educational responsibilities include on-going teaching of residents, medical students, fellows and other students as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and sequence a range of NGS library types to support company objectives
Perform experiments to optimize NGS assays
Process improvement of current workflows and procedures in creative and effective ways
Work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team to solve complex problems
Effectively document and communicate results and progress
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Working knowledge of computers, databases, and working in a Windows/Mac environment
Strong written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills and ability to effectively work as part of a team
Flexible and willing to work across multiple projects and technology platforms in a fast-paced, rapidly changing scientific environment

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. There is tremendous potential for candidates with a record of scholarly productivity to collaborate with faculty of the SOM.

Minimum Education/Experience

Ph.D in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a closely related field.

The candidate must be creative, detail oriented, have excellent communication skills and be willing to work in a dynamic entrepreneurial environment.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

At least five (5) years of experience in a molecular research or diagnostic environment is preferred. Expertise in advanced sequencing techniques is preferred. For appointment at the Associate or Professor rank, a demonstrated track record of leadership, excellent communication skills, and publications in high-impact journals are preferred. All qualifications must be met by the time of appointment.
