The Division of Health Sciences is the largest and most complex division within the University, employing more than 700 EPA employees and 1,700 SPA employees. The Division is composed of numerous Centers, Institutes, and agencies such as the East Carolina Heart Institute and Eastern Area Health Education Center, the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences and Nursing, the Brody School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, and the Laupus Health Sciences Library. In addition to the academic and administrative responsibilities of the division, the four professional schools provide clinical services throughout eastern North Carolina in a variety of settings and venues.The School of Dental Medicine is composed of five administrative offices and three academic divisions. The Administrative units include the Office of the Dean, Associate Dean for Planning and Extramural Affairs, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Support and Faculty Development and the Office of Business and Financial Affairs. The three academic divisions are Surgical Sciences, Orthodontics/Pediatric Dentistry and General Dentistry.Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service Learning Centers located through-out North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties

Assist 4-handed dentistry. The dental assistant is responsible for patient preparation and patient flow. This position accesses patient information, charts as directed by dental students, dental residents and faculty dentist, monitors patients blood pressure and sedation as required. The assistant participates in dental exams and procedures. The assistant follows OSHA standards for hand washing, masking, gloving and disposal of contaminants. The assistant monitors patients as they are receiving treatment. The assistant performs dental x-rays as ordered by the dentist. The assistant transports patients as needed.The Dental Assistant is responsible for monitoring sterilization of equipment. Proper care must be taken of all dental equipment and instruments and this position maintains a total inventory. Equipment and instrumentation used by dental assistants, i.e., syringes and machines need to be in proper working order, and meet the requirements of established practices in order to meet OSHA requirements. This position is responsible for ordering supplies as needed. The dental assistant is expected to efficiently use the instrumentation required for dentistry. In addition, the assistant must be proficient in the use of the computer to access the electronic dental record. Medical record files must be maintained with absolute confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.The dental assistant handles all paperwork required for referrals. The dental assistant works with all categories of personnel, medical (dental) records, business office, lab, x-ray and physicians. Daily contact is made with fellow employees through verbal and written means. The dental assistant also has contact with outside agencies to include other dental offices, physician’s offices, Divisions of the School of Dental Medicine, insurance companies, pharmacies, supply companies and the general public. The dental assistant also performs secretarial duties as needed.Participates in the education of dental students and dental residents.

High school diploma or equivalency and completion of an accredited dental assisting program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
