05-Oct-2020 Close All Job SummaryThe NSF-funded Q-SEnSE Quantum Leap Challenge Institute encourages applications for an inaugural Director for Education and Workforce Development to implement initial programs and develop and manage additional initiatives. This is a new position at CU Boulder, in the city that merges education, technology companies, national labs, and a robust outdoor orientation along the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The Director is a senior member of the collegial, 4-person Q-SEnSE management team and is responsible for implementing and leading an initial set of education and workforce development programs included in the NSF proposal and, as time and funding permit, for designing and implementing additional related initiatives.

It is funded by the National Science Foundation and led by the University of Colorado Boulder, with 11 partner universities and National Labs around the U.S. and one European partner.   • Take lead in the development of Quantum Forge, a hands-on, problem solving training experience to introduce advanced undergraduates to methods and tools of experimental quantum science and engineering.
  • Establish and manage a Research Exchange Marketplace, to expand the traditional student base in QIST by matching students from community colleges and minority-serving institutions with internship opportunities in our partner universities, National labs, and in industry.
  • Guide and develop Quantum Engineering Educational Modules, and work with faculty from regional community colleges at multi-day summer workshops hosted by Q-SEnSE to create and adapt existing quantum education modules to meet different institutional contexts and needs.
  • Coordinate with an interdisciplinary Graduate Training program at the University of New Mexico, a Ph.D. concentration for students to earn degrees in a home department (Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, etc.) with a concentration in QIST.
  • Coordinate with a Professional Masters in Quantum Engineering program established and managed by the CU College of Engineering and Applied Science.
  • Guide and oversee online interactive quantum education modules, in collaboration with CU's internationally recognized PhET Interactive Simulations team (phet.colorado.edu).

  • No formal training in QIST is necessary but should understand the culture of research in physical science and engineering.
  • Applicants who have served in substantive deputy positions and are now eager to advance to a higher level of responsibility are also welcome.

  • A baccalaureate degree in physical science or engineering.
  • At least 2 years’ experience managing an education and workforce development program in a science or engineering context.

  • Be enthusiastic about implementing educational missions of university collaborations, including expanding access to traditionally underserved communities.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • An advanced degree in physical science or engineering.
  • At least 5 years’ experience managing an education and workforce development program in a science or engineering context. Applicants are encouraged to highlight any record of program expansion by attracting external funding.
