This position will be a SAS/analytic programmer and data manager for health-related research projects. The person in this role will need to work directly with researchers and research teams to understand research questions and evaluate/interpret data and statistical methods that may address those questions. Responsibilities will include: designing and developing data management strategies for grant-funded research projects that utilize large-scale research data including Medicare and Medicaid claims and other health care utilization data; working with researchers to develop analytic plans; understanding and promoting the research capabilities of secondary health data; and designing and developing programming and analytic tools to explore data across various platforms and applications. The person in this position will utilize SAS, biostatistics/econometrics.

Educational Requirements

Master’s and 1-2 years’ experience or Bachelors and 2-4 years’ experience or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should have at least 5 years of applied SAS programming experience (beyond using SAS’s statistical procedures). Experience must include complex data-step programming, SAS macros, and PROC SQL (including construction of complex SQL queries to subset large datasets and produce descriptive statistics).

Advanced understanding of SAS and large-scale data management best practices. Prefer candidates with knowledge of efficient programming techniques use for handling large data. Work will involve restructuring and querying terabyte-sized datasets containing millions of records and hundreds of variables.

Should have knowledge of data cleaning and validation, and how to read raw data and restructure raw data to create datasets that can be used for statistical analysis.

Successful experience working directly with research Principal Investigators (PIs) and research project teams to understand project needs and timelines, and then plan, provide and manage the necessary analytic programming support.

Analytic programming experience in health-related research. Must have proven ability to analyze complex problems and design solutions that fit within available technical environment. Employee will need to continually assess innovations and changes in a few analytic/statistical programming areas to effectively adopt new technologies that could enhance programming services.

Successful experience working Medicare Claims data desirable. Experience working with additional large-scale health care utilization data and/or EMR data is highly desirable. Knowledge of SAS product offerings and how they can be leveraged to enhance services is highly desirable. Experience working with relational databases and SQL a plus.
