General Summary

The Associate Vice President for Human Resources reports directly to the Vice President for Finance and Planning and is the principal administrator overseeing university-wide human resource functions, with responsibility for the development, implementation, and administration of comprehensive human resource programs and policies for the University including faculty, staff, graduate assistants and student employees. The position also oversees all environmental health & safety functions within the University.

Required Qualifications

1. Master’s degree or Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution
2. Professional HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP)
3. At least 10 years of senior administrative leadership experience
4. At least 7 years of HR leadership experience in the public sector, at least 5 of which must be within a higher education setting
5. At least 2 years of experience in a similar level position.
6. Experience managing a broad range of human resource functions, including employment, benefits, employee and labor relations, HRIS, and organizational training and development
7. Experience managing human resource functions in a union environment
8. Experience creating, evaluating, and implementing human resource policies
9. Demonstrated budget planning and management skills
10. Demonstrated ability to hire, develop, utilize, supervise, and evaluate staff effectively
11. Demonstrated commitment to supporting and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at an organization
12. Demonstrated ability to build trust and collaboration between human resources and a wide range of constituencies
13. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead through periods of change and uncertainty
14. Superior problem-solving skills
15. Outstanding communication skills

Desired Qualifications

1. Juris Doctorate
2. Demonstrated experience in human resource planning and implementation of the plan over a period of years
3. Experience with the State University Civil Service System of Illinois
4. Experience managing environmental health and safety functions
5. Experience with emergency preparedness

Mandatory Physical Requirement

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

Ability to conduct or attend meetings in various locations across campus.
Ability to travel off campus via car or commercial travel that will include overnight stays.
