The University of Colorado Cancer Center (UCCC), headquartered at the Anschutz Medical Campus, is Colorado’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, a distinction recognizing its outstanding contributions to research, clinical trials, prevention and cancer control. The UCCC is a member of the prestigious National Comprehensive Cancer Network®, an alliance of the nation’s leading cancer centers working to establish and deliver the gold standard in cancer clinical guidelines. UCCC also is a member of the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN), a unique research partnership among North America’s top cancer centers leveraging multiple data sources and matching patients to targeted treatments. UCCC is a consortium of approximately 300 researchers and physicians at three state universities and three healthcare delivery institutions.

Nature of Work
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC), this position is responsible for the operational success of the UCCC’s training and education mission and for the successful implementation of strategic initiatives as an NCI-designated cancer center. This position will provide constructive and forward-thinking leadership for the direction and management of the UCCC’s education administration; including directing and being accountable for the development and submission of training and education grants and contracts. This position is responsible for future-focused program planning to facilitate the long-term strategic mix of training and research activities within CRTEC. This position is accountable for program management and staff supervision, and budget management of the CRTEC research portfolio. Responsibilities will also include establishing relationships with the community, creating and collecting metrics, preparing presentation and reports, and organizing events as they relate to cancer education and training.

Examples of Work Performed
This position requires leadership, independent action, and the use of discretion and creativity within the limits of institutional, state and federal policies to facilitate the training and education mission of the UCCC. Anticipation and analysis of the consequences of various courses of action is required. This position operates independently to determine the appropriate processes to implement and achieve desired goals. The decision-making process requires detailed understanding and complex analysis of policies on multiple levels. This position is required to analyze existing policies, precedents, and non-specific practices and expected to recommend action to be taken in a particular circumstance.
 
Duties and Responsibilities 

This position has broad responsibilities for the overall administrations of the CRTEC Program.  The scope of responsibility includes, but is not limited to:

  • Develop report templates, identify and apply appropriate metric tracking and methods and develop data management strategies to facilitate  reporting on CRTEC activities to a variety of stakeholders including UCCC leadership, institutional leaders and the NCI
  • Engage community members including middle school, high school and undergraduate campuses to establish cancer-related education and training activities
  • Facilitate meetings and assume responsibility for follow-up action items and deadlines
  • Develop presentations for various CRTEC programs and present CRTEC activities to UCCC and institutional leaders, and for internal and external advisory boards
  • With the Associate Director of CRTEC, oversee the budget for the CRTEC program
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Research Administration to define CRTEC relevant data within the larger CCSG data structures and develop additional data sources as needed to support the CRTEC programs’ reporting needs related to the UCCC training and career development funding portfolio, and data metrics related to publications , shared resource usage, pilot and other internal funding, and clinical trials held by mentored members
  • Assist in preparing the CRTEC program narrative and presentation at the site-review for the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG)
  • Assist in developing the funded training and career development portfolio for the UCCC, by preparing and submitting grants on the topics of education, training, community engagement, across a continuum of trainees ranging from middle school to faculty; preparing manuscripts on related topics for publication; ensure proper institutional guidelines and expectations are followed with grant submission

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological or Social Sciences, Health or Public Administration, Public Health, business or related fields
  • Three (3) years’ experience in education, training, or community outreach program development
  • Three (3) years professional grants management and administrative leadership experience working in an academic environment
  • Supervisory experience
  • Successful grant writing experience (led the effort, or was a part of a team that  prepared, submitted and/or received an education, research or community service-based grant)
Substitution
Professional-level experience in a related field can be substituted for the degree on a year-to-year basis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD degree in Biological or Social Sciences, Health or Public Administration, Public Health, business or related fields
  • Experience in managing extramurally sponsored education programs and/or training grants
  • Successfully served as key personnel on a training and/or education grants
  • Track record of quality mentoring as demonstrated by successful outcomes, graduation, prestigious award,  acceptance to graduate or clinical program, publication, invitation to speak at a national conference, or awarded competitive grant
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies)

  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, accepted theories, practices and principles of general management and administration
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze, and interpret various types of data related to tracking trainees and surveys; leverage the data to assess needs and gaps within the program and recommend appropriate courses of action to address the gaps; recommend modifications to trainees’ individualized development plans to enhance career development; and help implement the preferred course of action
  • Ability to communicate with various constituencies to engender trust and credibility necessary to further the training and education mission of the UCCC
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement and coordinate program activities and manage projects so they are on-time and within budget
  • High degree of professionalism and organization
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to direct and lead a team
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office programs and other analytical programs such as Graphpad
