Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus' philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more.

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) is headed by the Vice Chancellor - University Development and Alumni Relations who reports directly to the Chancellor. UDAR employs approximately 260 career employees and 245 student employees. Its mission is to enhance UC Berkeley by increasing philanthropic giving to the campus. The UDAR budget is $56 million.

The Director, Financial Planning and Analysis reports directly to the Executive Director of Finance and Administration and is responsible for the UDAR budget in all matters including developing the annual campus budget submission, allocations and internal controls for the division, and unit budget development and allocations. The Director works directly with division senior leadership and campus finance leads, and ensures operations for the division are within UC policies, through creating an environment of trust, the careful stewardship of resources, and appropriate transparency and confidentiality. The Director provides expert financial analysis and advice to the Vice-Chancellor, Associate Vice-Chancellors and the Executive Director of Finance and Administration and Executive Directors and managers of UDAR departments.

  • Responsible for maintaining integrity of UDAR's data in campus budget and reporting systems through supervision and oversight, functions as chief budget liaison for budget allocations, oversees analysis and policy development for campus-wide fundraising funding issues and budget processes, resource allocations and funding models.
  • Involved in developing, modifying, and executing campus policies which impact immediate operation(s) and may also have campus-wide effect.
  • Regularly interacts with senior management or executive levels on matters concerning several functional areas, unit and/or customers.
  • Manages three financial analysts and business office staff who perform complex financial modeling and analyses, budget and other required reporting, T&E reimbursement and purchases, miscellaneous revenue, supplies, prepare correcting journals and support the key control reviews, provide monthly fiscal reports to managers, update financial plans.

Required Qualifications
  • Highly skilled in or ability to quickly learn CalAnswers, CalPlanning, Excel tools.
  • Must have strong analytical, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Position requires superior inter-personal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels.
  • Requires the ability to influence the thinking of, or gain acceptance of others in sensitive situations.
  • Requires knowledge of financial policies, accounting principles, internal controls, financial systems, budgeting and reporting techniques and human resource planning, preferably within the UC system.
  • Client service oriented, has good listening, critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or related field required.
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training desirable.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional certification preferred.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
