The Director of Training Initiatives will be responsible for the development, coordination, and presentation of campus-wide programs and trainings to promote inclusion and equity on campus. The trainings and programs will be related to intercultural competence/awareness, cultural humility, racial equity, social justice, intergroup relations and intergroup dialogue, and other topics addressing equity and inclusion. Trainings will be tailored to different campus audiences, including students, staff, faculty, and administrators. This position aligns with the University of Arizona’s core value of inclusion and the belief that the richness of our culture is because of our diversity; that people are the source of our strength; and their different perspectives, backgrounds and experiences make us stronger. The Director will report to the Associate Vice Provost, Diversity and Inclusion. The Director will also work collaboratively with diversity and inclusion committees across campus in colleges and divisions to support distributed training models, develop train-the-trainer programs, and offer dialogue facilitation training. Additionally, the Director will work collaboratively with the Office of Multicultural Engagement, Faculty Affairs, Human Resources, Housing and Residential Life, among other units. Duties & Responsibilities

Duties may include but not limited to:

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership for complex and comprehensive diversity and inclusion training and educational programs, with the major responsibility for developing and delivering training materials, presentations, methods and procedures related to racial equity, social justice, intergroup dialogue, intercultural competency/awareness, cultural humility, and other equity and inclusion topics tailored to students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Develops evidence-based training programs and materials.
  • Partners with deans, department heads, faculty members, supervisors, and other campus constituents to create positive, inclusive work and learning environments.
  • Advises diverse campus constituents, including campus leadership, on navigating difficult conversations and intergroup relations.
  • Develops strategies, programs, trainings, and resources to foster the retention, achievement, and advancement of groups that have been marginalized.
  • Directs data gathering activities, including needs assessments, evaluations and analyses.
  • Oversees required diversity and inclusion online trainings for students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Works independently, collaboratively, and equitably across diverse communities on campus, and adapts to the needs of varied collaborators.
  • Gathers data, conducts research, maintains records, and creates reports related to training completion and impact. 
  • Reviews and evaluates effectiveness of work activities.
  • Serves on campus committees related to equity and inclusion as needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to integrate research and practice into training programs.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence, problem-solving skills, communication skills and ability to work effectively on teams while under pressure in a variety of situations.
  • Collaborative style and ability to accomplish goals through working with a variety of constituents and adeptly facilitate situations of conflict that result in strengthening and building relationships.
  • Ability to work with ambiguity in a changing environment.
  • Ability to influence and inspire others to take action around issues of equity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and cultural competence development.
  • Knowledge of instructional design theories, pedagogies, and methodologies.
  • Ability to develop web-based content.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND seven years related work experience in program and training development, OR any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Extensive experience developing training curriculum and delivering effective, interactive, high impact training programs.
  • High level of cultural awareness and humility to build relationships and trust across diverse experiences, identities, and positions.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Good understanding of course management system utilities and functions and understanding of digital learning technology tools such as lecture capture, audio/video editing, social media, etc.
  • Self-motivated, able to alternate easily between working independently and on a team.
  • Understanding and appreciation of key issues and structural concerns confronting groups that are diverse and have been marginalized.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD or other advanced degree.
  • Eight years related work experience in equity and inclusion training program development.
  • Experience working with faculty and campus leadership.
  • Experience leading or designing intergroup dialogue.
  • Knowledge of inclusive leadership training and development.
  • Proficient in assessment and data analysis software, such as SPSS, Stata, or qualitative software.
  • Proficient in developing online survey tools.  
  • Experience managing virtual platforms such as Zoom, WebEx, Google Classroom, etc.
  • Background in student affairs.
