We are currently recruiting for either a Communications & Engagement Associate (U05) or Communications & Engagement Specialist (U07), depending on the applicant’s qualifications, skill sets and experience. Either position will report to GRI’s acting Director of Programs & Outreach, and is based in Williamsburg, VA. The candidate selected for either position is expected to relocate to Williamsburg by January 2021.

The Communications & Engagement Associate (U05) will support the Global Research Institute Program Team in a wide variety of strategic initiatives to promote innovative student and faculty engagement related to international policy and research. In this entry-level position, the individual will help execute student programs, institute events and outreach activities in addition to carrying out strategic communications (website content, email campaigns, social media, photography, advertising, etc.). This position is ideal for individuals who would like to broaden their communications and programming skills, and offers a diverse portfolio of activities engaged in innovative research and international issues.

The Communications & Engagement Specialist (U07) provides experienced leadership and implementation support for GRI’s communications, including audience outreach, content creation, corporate communications, publication support, website development, events, and management of student engagement. This position will take the lead on maintaining internal databases and systems including marketing collateral, presentations, backgrounders, prospectuses, case statements, and infographics, in addition to maintaining content on GRI’s website, email campaigns and social media platforms. The Communications & Engagement Specialist will also assist with proposal drafting and editing, and will provide high quality, polished, and copy-edited presentations and collateral. The ideal candidate for this role will nurture a dynamic community of scholars and students, in particular through steering GRI’s Student Leadership Council and through event planning and execution. Through these activities, the individual will have an opportunity to build and own a dynamic portfolio of work.

Required Qualifications

Communications & Engagement Associate (U05)
•Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience
•Experience in communications, programming, and/or event planning
•Strong verbal and written communication skills
•An interest in building communities through coordination of events and other engagement activities
•Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize competing demands.
•Strong and effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of partners (including, but not limited, to alums, project team leads, campus support staff)

Communications & Engagement Specialist (U07)
•Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as communications, journalism, marketing, business, education, political science, government, economics, or international relations or a combination of education and experience
•Relevant professional experience
•Strong verbal and written communication skills
•Experienced in executing regular content creation activities for social media platforms and email campaigns (e.g., MailChimp, Marketing Cloud)
•Experience building communities through coordination of events and other engagement activities
•Experience to create a functional content calendar, write blog posts, and craft compelling graphics and posters
•Demonstrated ability to summarize analytical work and clearly present findings to audiences with varying interests and backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

Communications & Engagement Associate (U05)
•Knowledge of or experience in higher education, communications, international relations, or international development/security
•Research experience, ( undergraduate research assistant experience will be considered) or Familiarity with communications and email campaign strategies
•Working knowledge of communication software and contact databases
•Experience supervising students

Communications & Engagement Specialist (U07)
•Several years of relevant professional experience
•Working knowledge of audience segmentation and email campaign strategies
•Experience with at least one of the following: 1 – developing a corporate performance indicator tracking system; 2 – creating a strategic communications plan; or 3 – translating key messages into brand voice and visual identity
•Experience developing and analyzing organic and paid social media marketing
•Experience with a website content management system
•Experience supervising students
•Experience in higher education
•Experience in fundraising
