Assistant Director of Research Finance🔍School of Medicine, Redwood City, California, United States📁Finance📅Oct 02, 2020 Post Date📅87442 Requisition #The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking an Assistant Director of Research Finance to co-lead and manage a growing team responsible for post award activities. Reporting to the Director of Research Development, Integrity, and Strategy, the Assistant Director of Research Finance will be responsible for oversight of a large volume and diverse set of complex, federal and non-federal sponsored and non-sponsored research projects, involving multiple sub-awards, principal investigators, and/or cross-school initiatives. As we seek to enhance and deepen administrative support to Department investigators (faculty, postdocs, instructors, etc.), the Assistant Director will work closely with the existing team and the Director to increase team knowledge and build capacity and skills as needed.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is the third largest clinical department in the School of Medicine and the fourth largest with respect to research expenditures. With over 70 faculty on the professoriate and more than 200 clinician educators, the Department is a top-10 NIH-funded Department in the country. The Department has wide-range of NIH and other grants and projects including multiple NIH T32, DP, P and U awards, collaborative agreements, and more than 15 NIH K awards, DARPA-funded research, numerous foundation grants, and a range of substantial gifts and endowments. In addition, the Department has many faculty who are dually-appointed at Stanford and the VA adding an additional layer of funds flow complexity.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
•Supervise other staff, delegate tasks and projects and monitor work. Conduct performance appraisals; provide coaching, mentoring and take disciplinary actions when required.
•Actively identify and collaborate to develop training tools and programs for staff. Manage and contribute to continuous process improvement and staff development.
•Ensure that Department, Institutional, and Sponsor guidelines and rules are followed with respect to quarterly certification for sponsored research projects, payroll allocation, monthly- and year-end close out, progress reports to sponsors, and other time-sensitive financial and administrative tasks.
•Resolve extremely complex issues escalated from team members and determine if further review is necessary by senior management or key university constituencies.
•Oversee and review compliance with proposal guidelines, communicate proposal preparation and submittal process and closeout.
•Serve as subject matter expert on pre and/or post- award research administration. Interpret complex regulations, rules, policies and procedures.
•Work with staff to ensure professional development towards individual career goals and compliance with all aspects of research finance and discretionary funding per Stanford policy.
•Manage a portfolio of grants, contracts, and non-sponsored accounts.
•Provide short-term backup coverage.
•Collaborate with other stakeholders around the School and University and external organizations as needed.
•Be open to becoming a content expert in areas not already listed as the research environment evolves.

•Strong understanding of GAAP.
•Willingness to learn aspects of clinical finance.
•Understanding of gift funding, endowments, and other non-sponsored funds.
•Ability to work effectively and with diplomacy with other institutional offices (e.g., legal, office of sponsored research, privacy, industrial contracts, etc.)
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor’s degree and seven years of job related experience, or combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
•Expert knowledge and fluency of governmental regulations (e.g. FAR, A-21, A-110, A-133, CAS).
•Knowledge and ability to understand, interpret, and communicate university policies and procedures.
•Excellent oral, written, and communication skills.
•Excellent analytical skills; demonstrated proficiency in Excel and web-based tools.
•Strong accounting skills; knowledge of accounting principles.
•Knowledge of procurement needs, including sole-sourcing, cost analyses, vendor requirements, and small business reporting.
•Strong knowledge of property management requirements related to Stanford or non-Stanford title of equipment and fabrications.
•Expert in project management, including managing international collaborations and complex multi-sub award contracts.
•Knowledge of personnel management, including proposing effort for and training and hiring of students, post-doctorals, academic appointments, regular staff, bargaining unit staff, and consultants, along with the circumstances appropriate for each type of position.
•Extreme attention to detail.
•Ability to review a proposal or manage a project with understanding of the overall scope and goal of each sponsored project.
•Excellent time management and organizational skills.
•Demonstrated ability to develop and manage staff.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
•Cardinal Curriculum I and II must be completed to remain in this position.
•Certified Accountant or Auditor, MBA, project management certification, or similar credential desire.
•Frequently sit, grasp lightly, sue fine manipulation and perform desk-based computer tasks, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing up to ten pounds.
•Occasionally stand, walk, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, write by hand and sort and file paperwork or parts.
•Rarely lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing 11-20 pounds.
