Job Description

The Department of Communication, History, & Philosophy seeks applications from qualified candidates with a robust research agenda for a full-time, tenure-track appointment beginning in Fall 2021.Candidates with experience and/or interest in public history and digital humanities are preferred. This position will serve as the department’s liaison with the San Antonio African American Community Archive & Museum (SAAACAM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the collection, preservation, and sharing of African American history and culture in the San Antonio region. The successful candidate also will direct student research projects, teach introductory and upper-level undergraduate History courses, and help prepare history and social studies teachers to meet the state of Texas’ new requirement for African American Studies curriculum in the high schools. The base teaching load at A&M-SA is 3/3. The Department seeks excellence in instruction, research, and service. Summer teaching assignments may be available but are not guaranteed.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. by the time of appointment in History or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated specialization in African American History.
  • A minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in History.
  • Evidence of scholarly achievement including engagement with the field of African American history.
  • University teaching experience commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor.

In a letter of interest which explains a research agenda and teaching experience, please also speak to the following topics:

  • Experience and/or interest in working with community partners on public history projects.
  • Experience with digital humanities modes of instruction and scholarship.
  • Commitment to working with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and community members.
