Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities:
Southern invites applications from individuals who believe in the mission of public higher education and are committed to outstanding teaching and scholarship/creative activity. Successful candidates will be disciplinary scholars devoted to a student-centric approach.
The Department of Special Education is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August 2021. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching special education courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. In addition to teaching responsibilities, faculty are required to engage in scholarship/creative activity, service to the department and University, professional participation and student advising.
Required Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in special education or related area and at least one graduate degree in special education; three years of full-time K-12 special education teaching experience with students with disabilities; demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based practices in instruction of individuals with disabilities, including diagnostic assessment, assistive technology, and positive behavior interventions and support; excellent written and oral communication skills; evidence of strong potential for scholarly activity leading to peer-reviewed publications, external grants or other support, and presentations at professional conferences.
Preferred Qualifications:
Developing and/or demonstrated record of scholarship/creative activity; K-12 special education teaching certification; knowledge of federal and Connecticut state laws regarding the education of students with disabilities; demonstrated effectiveness in serving culturally and linguistically diverse student populations; university teaching experience in special education coursework; experience teaching in a variety of formats (e.g., on ground, hybrid, online); experience in field-based mentoring/supervision of teacher candidates, including assessments such as edTPA; and demonstrated effectiveness in leadership roles.
