Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities:

Southern invites applications from individuals who believe in the mission of public higher education and are committed to outstanding teaching and scholarship. Successful candidates will be disciplinary scholars devoted to a student-centric approach.

Candidates are expected to teach courses in their area of expertise and maintain an active research program. All faculty at SCSU share in academic advising and participate in department/university service. Candidates must be committed to teaching within a vibrant and demanding public basic and applied arts and sciences environment, and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, mentoring and research with undergraduates. Nominal teaching load is 12 credit-hours per semester. SCSU offers reassigned time for research, load credit for research supervision, university grants for research and curriculum development, sabbatical leave, and support for grant applications.

Tenure-track faculty at SCSU are expected to conduct creative activity/research in their area of expertise. These activities include, but are not limited to, research leading to publication of books and/or articles in academic and professional journals, seeking funding in support of research and teaching needs and contributing to workshops and conferences.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates are required to have: (a) a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with emphasis in health psychology or behavioral medicine, or experimental Health Psychology by the time of appointment (ABD may apply), (b) evidence of the ability to engage in meaningful research activity, and (c) ability to teach in one’s area of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates will have a background in either health psychology or behavioral medicine. Those with clinical training and the potential for licensure as well as experimental health psychologists will be considered. Candidates with specializations in closely related areas will be considered. Candidates should be qualified to teach courses within their area of expertise, as well as the undergraduate course in Health Psychology. The preferred candidate will have an active research program with evidence of productivity and prior experience teaching at the college level with evidence of teaching ability. A balance between research and professional and/or applied experience is optimal. Experience working with undergraduate researchers is valued.
