General Summary

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer will occupy a unique position in the College of Education at Illinois State University. The DEI Officer will report to the Dean and will serve as a member of the College leadership team. The overall responsibility of the DEI officer will be to support all undergraduate and graduate education and administration majors in the college, and all teacher education candidates in the five colleges across the university. The DEI officer will develop and implement strategic initiatives that help the College of Education attain measurable diversity, equity, and inclusion goals that contribute to a diversified educator workforce.

Additional Information

In this new position within the College of Education, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer will work with the Dean to provide a supportive college climate for underrepresented teacher candidates and faculty. As a thoughtful advisor for the College, the DEI Officer will expand and deepen discussions about diversity, inclusion, and related issues in the curriculum;
coach and support underrepresented teacher candidates and faculty; interact with College-sponsored registered student organizations; and help identify practices that will lead to the successful recruitment and retention of diverse teacher candidates and faculty.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree
2. 5+ years of related experience, with progressively responsible experience in the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion
3. Evidence of successfully developing and implementing an antiracist, equity, social justice agenda in the community or workplace
4. Strong communication and conflict resolution skills needed to navigate socially- and politically-charged situations to resolve problems, build consensus, and reconcile competing interests
5. Antiracist and equity work experience that reflects a critical, analytical examination of social institutions (Critical Race Theory, Intersectionality, or other similar theoretical frameworks)
6. Experience in planning professional development
7. Demonstrated leadership skills, including effective teamwork skills

Desired Qualifications

1. Master’s Degree or higher
2. Experience in a higher education setting or in community/grassroots organizing
3. Successful experience with creating and implementing institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in a collaborative way

Work Hours

Generally, Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with occasional evenings and weekends as dictated by College needs.

Mandatory Physical Requirement

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
1. Ability to effectively communicate daily.
2. Ability to use a computer in day-to-day work (i.e. type on a keyboard and use a mouse).
3. Ability to maintain a high level of concentration.
4. Ability to conduct or attend meetings in various locations on and off campus.
