Position Summary:The Director of the School determines and supervises the instructional and co-curricular program, including lectures, films, concerts, field trips, etc.; he/she hires the School’s faculty and summer staff, works with instructors on developing and implementing curriculum, administers the School budget, supervises student progress (including those enrolled in the DML Program completing coursework and writing dissertations), provides advice and support to students, faculty colleagues, and staff, and represents the School at professional meetings. He/she also has curricular oversight for the MA program of the corresponding School Abroad.
Essential Functions:The Director spends the summer in residence on the Vermont campus where he/she is oversees the instructional and co-curricular program, and generally teaches one organized course. During the academic year the Director plans the curriculum, hires faculty and summer staff, evaluates and publicizes the program, recruits students, and oversees the admissions process.
Initial appointment is for three years, renewable up to a maximum of three terms. Performance will be evaluated through the Annual Performance Summary process in March of each year. Directors submit an Annual Report in the fall of each year summarizing School performance for the summer, goals for the next year, and vision for the School. The criteria for evaluation are:
- operation of summer program
- quality of instruction
- exercise of fiscal responsibility
- promotion of curricular development
- recruitment of students
- effective representation of Middlebury College
- student satisfaction
- contribution to achieving the goals of the Language Schools
Other duties as assigned.
Education:He/she should be a senior faculty member with tenure or tenurable credentials in an established program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:He/she should have a background in language pedagogy and technology, and strong interpersonal skills.
Experience:Experience in language teaching, directing or coordinating a language program, and in general administration.
