Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Office of TRIO Programs administers three grants programs: Student Support Services (SSS) Classic, SSS STEM-Health Sciences, and the McNair Scholars program. All TRIO programs are federally and university funded to serve first-generation, low-income, disabled, and under-represented college students through academic advising, coaching, tutoring, and developing research skills. All TRIO programs are required by federal guidelines to provide robust instruction in financial literacy.

Position Summary:

The Coordinator for Financial Aid and Financial Literacy position will be split-funded by each grant so that their time-effort and pay will be distributed across all three grants. The Coordinator is responsible for instructing TRIO students on understanding financial aid awards, finding additional funding opportunities (scholarships, grants, fellowships), and developing a literacy in financial topics including: personal finance, knowledge of markets and economics, higher education financing, and other financial skills. The Coordinator will provide individual sessions, workshops, and course modules for TRIO students on the topics above to build their financial literacy. The Coordinator works closely with TRIO colleagues in counseling and tutoring to make sure students in the program are receiving the support they need to successfully complete a college degree. This position reports to the Director of TRiO Programs and is part of the Office of TRiO Programs in the Division of Student Success.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Coordinator for Financial Aid and Financial Literacy must hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience with at least 2 years experience with financial aid applications, detailed knowledge of federal, state, and UNCG guidelines regarding financial aid eligibility. A background in financial literacy program development and instruction is also preferred.

Key Responsibility:

Oversee financial aid awards with TRiO students.

Essential Tasks:

Oversee financial aid awards and competence of TRIO students in understanding their awards. Meet one-on-one with TRIO students to monitor their aid awards, unmet financial need, and behaviors related to budgeting. Create individual action plans for students to develop their financial literacy through individual sessions, group workshops, and Financial Literacy instruction.

Provide group workshops to TRIO students on financial literacy topics on a regular basis. Further develop the TRIO Financial Literacy course curriculum to instruct students and track their progress in course materials.

Assist TRIO students with applications for undergraduate research funding opportunities, post-baccalaureate fellowship programs, and graduate school funding opportunities.
