About the Division

The role of Clemson Livestock Poultry Health (LPH) is to protect animal health through control of endemic, foreign, and emerging diseases in livestock and poultry and to protect the health of South Carolina consumers by providing a comprehensive inspection service to ensure that meat and poultry products are safe, wholesome, and accurately labeled. LPH serves as South Carolina's animal health authority, state meat and poultry inspection department, and the state's veterinary diagnostic center in fulfilling its role.

Livestock Poultry Health has a major role in protecting the health of food animals (beef, poultry, swine, etc.), and other livestock which helps ensure not only their productivity but also their access to both domestic and export markets. These critical services to the agribusiness industry make significant impacts on economic activity in our state. LPH functions include conducting surveillance for diseases that affect both humans and animals, providing the diagnostic expertise that allows for treatment and eradication of disease in domestic animals, identifying diseases in wildlife that could affect humans or domestic animals, inspecting and testing the processing of meat and poultry products, and coordinating state agricultural and animal emergency response as lead agency for ESF-17.

Position Description

As the State Veterinarian, the person in this role will be the chief law enforcement officer for all laws, rules, and regulations delegated to the State Veterinarian or the Clemson University Board of Trustees pertaining to animal health and meat and poultry inspection. In this regard, this person is expected to interact with industry and legislating groups in the formulation of state legislation and enforcement procedures.

As the Director of the Livestock Poultry Health (LPH) Division, the person in this role will provide leadership to all division activities - including Animal Health Programs, SC Meat Poultry Inspection Department, and the Veterinary Diagnostic Center. They will coordinate the activities of extension veterinarians in the livestock and forages extension team, as well as liaison with South Carolina livestock, farm and veterinary organizations. The Director is responsible for budget development and administration, policy development and program direction, long and short-term planning, and personnel administration within the division. This role also represents LPH on the U.S. Animal Health Association Board of Directors as the agency representative.

Additionally, this role serves as a primary information source for an administrative team that establishes policies for Clemson University's Public Service Activities. These policies are related to State and Federal legislation that addresses regulatory and consumer protection activities in animal health and meat poultry inspection. Therefore, the person in this role will be expected to establish working relationships with State and Federal agencies, with an emphasis on cooperative agreements and grants


Candidates are expected to possess, at minimum, a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and ten years of experience. Candidates are expected to be eligible to apply for SC license to practice veterinary medicine. Board Certification or graduate degrees in relevant fields may be substituted for 5 years of required work experience.

The ideal candidate for this role will have animal health regulatory experience, food animal veterinary practice, and/or veterinary extension experience.
