Assistant Professor in Guitar

Position: Full-time, 9 month, tenure accruing faculty position

Date of Expected Hire: August 16, 2021

The School of Music at the University of Florida invites applicants for an Assistant Professor position in Guitar. We seek an exceptionally accomplished guitarist with national and possible international visibility who will help grow our undergraduate and graduate guitar programs, including the new DMA program. 

Duties include teaching guitar studio, coaching guitar ensembles, building and maintaining a guitar ensemble, teaching a course in the UF Quest series, and collaborating with other departments and actively participating in the cultural life at the University of Florida, in addition to serving in committees as appropriate. Additional responsibilities may include participating in School of Music ensembles according to the individual’s areas of strength.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC: Organized within the College of the Arts, the School of Music plays an important role in the academic and cultural life of the University, the College’s Creative Campus initiative and the community. The School has 43 full-time and seven adjunct faculty, serving some 100 graduate and 200 undergraduate music majors. Degree programs include B.A., B.M., M.M., D.M.A., and the Ph.D. in music education, composition, ethnomusicology, and historical musicology. Program emphases include performance, music education, theory, composition, music history and literature, ethnomusicology, conducting, and sacred music. The School of Music is also home to the UF Bands program, which includes “The Pride of the Sunshine” Gator Marching Band. Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree required

• Applicant should be an outstanding and active professional guitarist with a strong record of teaching and recruiting at the collegiate level
• Specialization in classical guitar with ability to teach other repertoires such as Flamenco, Latin, Jazz, etc.
• Ability to collaborate across disciplines in a Research I university

• Capacity to participate in shared governance through service to the School, College and University

• Distinguished record of achievement in the field at a national or international level
• Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications: The successful candidate will bring to the position:

• Doctorate preferred

• Teaching experience of 3 to 5 years beyond graduate assistantship at the university level
• Evidence of a commitment to innovative and cross-disciplinary curricula
• Demonstrated aptitude for working toward structural and strategic change, particularly in relationship to diversity, equity and inclusion
• Demonstrated capacity for effective engagement in recruitment
• Strong organizational, management and communication skills
• Evidence of success in negotiation and collaboration toward creative and administrative goals
