Director of Health and Counseling ServicesStudent Affairs

The Director of Health and Counseling Services provides vision, leadership and direction for a comprehensive, integrated, inclusive health and well-being approach to students’ physical and mental health needs. The Director supervises Arnold Health Services and Counseling and Consultation Services. They serve as the Director for the daily programmatic and service operations for both health and counseling services.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct service: Provides inclusive health and mental health advocacy, support, and direct care to a diverse student population. Provides guidance for care providers. Successful services and outreach reflect knowledge of race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, worldview, ability, and socio-economic status in health and mental health support plans. Based on licensure, delivers direct services to students (either counseling or healthcare) approximately 6-8 hours/week. Advocates for and supports both individual students and the broad student experience by providing intervention support as part of the Student Success Team and the University crisis on-call response. Manages crises involving students as needed.
  • Educational Outreach: Researches, develops and collaborates to implement a comprehensive health and well-being outreach program for students, including health, mental health, sexual health, alcohol and other drug education, sexual assault and other key campus health issues. Collaborative partners include, but not limited to, athletics, residence life, fraternity and sorority life, student activities, diversity and inclusion and wellness.
  • Daily Operations: Provides leadership and direction for the daily operations of Counseling and Consultation Services and Arnold Health Services (two collaborative departments). Maintains budget authority and oversight. Serves as a liaison to a consulting physician regarding procedural changes or needs. Maintains all administrative compliance reporting including state immunization reports and DHS reporting. Provides communication to students/families regarding student health insurance.
  • Supervision: Recruits, selects, trains, mentors and evaluates a diverse professional staff in health services and counseling services, with a critical eye to serving a diverse student body. Hiring and professional development practices reflect a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree required, doctoral degree strongly preferred (e.g., PhD, DNP) with licensure in counseling, nursing or related field (e.g., social work; psychology); a minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience and related administrative responsibilities strongly preferred. Certification and a minimum of five years’ experience on a college or university campus strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate a strong leadership vision for student health and well-being and inspire and engage in collaboration with a diverse student, faculty and staff constituency.
  • Must live within 30 miles to Bloomington, IL for on-call response.
