Appointment: Temporary, one (1) year position beginning August 2020. This position is full-time, 1.0 FTE.

Position Summary: Public health nurse for the University of Puget Sound community during COVID-19 pandemic. Will lead contact tracing efforts; respond to student, faculty and staff concerns; and provide counsel to symptomatic individuals. Nursing activities include systematic analysis of health data, coalition building, and collaborating with community partners and health department.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Public Health Sciences

  • Provide care coordination, referral and follow up for symptomatic students, faculty and staff related to COVID-19 and provide recommendations to individuals who have had close contact with COVID positive person
  • Provide phone triage and medical consultation to students; screen to determine seriousness of medical problems for the purpose of providing quarantine and referral recommendations.
  • Use public health surveillance/disease investigation methods for community outreach, screening, and case finding of communicable and infectious diseases
  • Provide education and support campus campaigns to promote social distancing, mask-wearing, and other prevention efforts
  • Obtain release of information as appropriate and ensures patient confidentiality
  • Evaluate outcomes of public health nursing interventions and works with others to make changes as necessary
  • Participate in response teams to prevent, minimize and contain adverse health events and conditions resulting from communicable diseases

Contact tracing and Policy development
  • Lead contact tracing team, lead weekly meetings with team, support contact tracers
  • Assist in the development of short and long range policies, plans and programs related to pandemic response
  • Maintain relationship with public health department re: infectious disease control and contact tracing
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with other university departments and staff

Community Dimensions of Practice
  • Deliver targeted, culturally appropriate information to help students, faculty and staff understand disease prevention and health promotion efforts
  • Advocate on behalf of vulnerable individuals and populations; participates in assessing and evaluating health care services to ensure that people are informed of available services
  • Advise residence life partners on campus regarding isolation and quarantine efforts
  • Educate community stake holders on public health issues

Analysis and Assessment
  • Participate in community assessment; understand incidence and prevalence data; know how to access basic community epidemiological data
  • Participate in the analysis of data to identify trends, health problems, and manage cases on campus
  • Coordinates regular screening measures to understand the prevalence of COVID-19 on campus

Clinical Practice
  • Supports clinical staff as needed. May include testing of patients with COVID-19 symptoms and follow up phone check ins to students who test positive
  • Maintains proper use of PPE
  • Remain professionally current with knowledge and practice

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Baccalaureate Degree with a current Washington State license as a Registered Nurse (or license-eligible and attained within 3 months of employment) or Baccalaureate Degree in Public Health.
  • Two (2) years of public health nursing experience preferred
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS)/Incident Command System (ICS) certification within 4 months of employment.
  • Certified in contact tracing
  • CPR certification
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards
  • Knowledge of current epidemiological data analysis and surveillance methods used in the management of communicable and infectious disease
  • Knowledge of data collection, analysis, and interpretation techniques
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit, sometimes for prolonged periods
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community
