Office hours: USC’s core business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Staff are required to participate in events as assigned which may require occasional nights, weekends and travel.

National Fellowships and Scholar Programs, a unit in the South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina, invites applications for a Communications Assistant. We are seeking outstanding applicants with strong administrative and organizational skills to serve as a member of our team. Creativity and prior communications skills will be used to assist in promoting our students and our programs.

The communications assistant will serve as an information source and contact person for students, faculty, and staff desiring services or assistance with programs in the National Fellowships and Scholar Programs office. This position will coordinate departmental communications and social media efforts, and develop and execute a variety of functions to support the recruitment and recognition of national fellowship applicants and the Top Scholar Community.

Duties include managing the daily operations of the National Fellowships and Scholar Programs office including mail, phone, student appointments, and managing student assistants; assisting with administrative duties, including database entry and managing incoming files of potential candidates for national fellowships; assisting with creating and implementing a departmental communications plan; ensuring accuracy and consistency in style and presentation of departmental materials; serving as the departmental communications, social media coordinator and webmaster; and assisting in the development and dissemination of electronic newsletters.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)

Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of work experience that is directly related to the area of employment, or high school diploma and 5 years work experience that is directly related to the area of employment; or equivalency.

The ability to analyze and interpret information accurately, take direction, initiate action, and work as a team member is essential. Knowledge of grammar, composition and style. Ability to gather, organize and present oral and written information in a clear, concise and accurate manner. Ability to exercise excellent professional judgment and discretion. MS Office proficiency (Excel and Access), with strong general clerical, computer, and technical skills, customer-service orientation, and the ability to work independently while contributing to the office functions.
