NATURE OF WORK

The Professional Research Assistant will be part of the Division of Geriatric Medicine, specifically in the IMAGE Research group (Investigations in Metabolism, Aging, Gender, and Exercise). This position is a faculty research position with primary duties to conduct research in metabolism, aging, gender and exercise and to provide clinical exercise support to participants enrolled in a clinical exercise program, Gerofit, for older Veterans. This position is not involved in the instructional program. This is a full-time, benefited position. The incumbent is not eligible for tenure and this is an at-will position, meaning an employee can be terminated at any time without notice and severance pay may not be provided. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The incumbent will work under the supervision or at the direction of the Director of the IMAGE group, the Director of the local Gerofit Program, other researchers in the lab, including Principal Investigators, Professors, Associate and Assistant Professors, Research Associates, and Instructors, and/or other clinical exercise physiologists.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe PRA will manage the day-to-day operations of clinical research studies and the clinical exercise program including, but not limited to, the following specific tasks:

  • Coordinate and implement human subject recruitment
  • Conduct phone screening
  • Schedule research appointments and orientation of volunteers for research studies
  • Perform clinical assessments for participants enrolled in the clinical exercise program
  • Conduct or assist with research procedures, including but not limited to measurements of body composition, exercise capacity, blood pressure, and metabolic rate, and acquisition of blood, fat, and muscle biospecimens
  • Generate individualized exercise prescriptions for research and clinical purposes
  • Supervise exercise training programs, both in-person and via telehealth. Telehealth may include live exercise sessions or leading participants through pre-recorded video exercises.
  • Maximize retention of study participants
  • Process human biological specimens (blood, fat, muscle)
  • Assist with wet lab maintenance and compliance, supply ordering and tracking, and other laboratory-related duties as needed
  • Assess, document, and maintain quality control of all study-related data
  • Perform data entry and quality assurance procedures
  • Attend research and clinical meetings
  • Other duties, as needed, for study completion
  •  KNOWEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

     

    The successful applicant should be motivated and able to work independently in an organized and efficient manner to manage clinical research studies. In addition, this PRA should:

  • Have excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to develop a cooperative rapport with others
  • Have excellent oral and written skills
  • Have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Have basic knowledge of data management, collection, quality control and analysis methods
  • Be proficient with computer software including REDCap, OnCore, and Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Pass required research compliance courses (CITI, HIPAA, etc.)
  • Possess (or obtain) basic life support (BLS) certification and maintain certification throughout employment
  • Be flexible in daily work schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends
  • Have strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Have basic bench laboratory skills (pipetting, aliquoting, etc.)
  • Have experience dealing with and appreciation of research volunteers
  • Have the ability to represent the University, Department, and Division, internally and externally, in a professional and positive manner
  •  WORKING CONDITIONS

     

    This is a full-time position with varying work hours, including early morning, evening, and weekend shifts. The main work sites will be the IMAGE group Exercise Research Lab located on the Anschutz Medical Campus and the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center in Aurora, CO. The incumbent may have to work or visit other sites/campuses associated with the University of Colorado Denver or the local VA, and other recruitment venues (health fairs, neighborhood events, churches, recreation centers, etc.).

     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

    The incumbent must be able to lift at least 15 pounds, and be able to sit or stand for more than 1 hour at a time. Incumbent must be able to hold phone receiver/wear headset for long periods of time. Incumbent must be certified in the performance of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation within 3 months of hiring and maintain certification throughout employment at the Exercise Research Lab.

     

    Salary and Benefits:

    The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $37,500 to $52,000.

     

    The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

     

    The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

    Qualifications
    MIMIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, integrative physiology, exercise/applied physiology, or a related discipline.
    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master’s degree
    • Experience in research or clinical exercise programs
    • Lab bench work experience.
