Departmental Overview
Research in the Barton Lab focuses on the immune system. We are interested in interactions between microbes and the host. One area of focus is the mammalian intestine.
This position serves as the technician responsible for the maintenance of a gnotobiotic mouse colony. These animals are maintained in an environment devoid of bacteria. The gnotobiotic technician will be responsible for all aspects of colony management. In addition, the technician will help maintain the conventional mouse colony as well as spend time in the main laboratory, assisting other lab members with experiments.
Responsibilities
Maintenance of gnotobiotic mouse colony
- Assembly of microisolators
- Preparation and sterilization of supplies (autoclaving)
- Husbandry (changing cages, weaning, refreshing food/water, health checks)
- Manage daily facility operations including monitoring supply stocks, ordering replacements, cleaning facility, moving supplies in and out of microisolators
- Maintaining census
- Documentation of compliance
General animal husbandry of specific pathogen free mouse colony
- Husbandry (checking for pups, weaning, ear tagging, euthanization)
Microbiological testing
- Culturing of fecal material from gnotobiotic animals
- PCR analyses of fecal material from gnotobiotic animals
Research related to gnotobiotic colony
- Assist lab members with experiments
- Prepare written summaries of experiments and results
Participate in weekly lab meetings and other group meetings. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- A willingness to learn new techniques and skills.
- Exactness and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with aseptic technique
- Willingness to work with mice, bacterial preparations.
- Able to work on feet for extended periods of time, up to 6 hours a day.
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and Filemaker Pro.
- Comfortable assembling equipment.
- Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training, preferably in the biomedical or health science.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience handling mice.
- Experience with bacterial culture techniques.
- Experience working with gnotobiotic microisolators.
Salary & Benefits
This is an hourly paid position. Rate will be commensurate with experience within the range of $23.34 (Step 1.0) - $27.85 (Step 9.0).
