The candidate will need experience in high accuracy radiation and meteorological measurements for research in climate monitoring. The position will be in the Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) of NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratories in Boulder, Colorado. This position will work at CIRES at CU Boulder alongside federal and university employees engaged in research examining the Earth’s surface radiation budget and climate forcing properties of atmospheric constituents at long-term U.S. and international sites as part of a GML Observatories network and in field campaign activities.
The successful candidate will provide management of data streams from long-term and short-term field observations, process new data products, manage calibration data, and assist in field logistics and related technician activities. The staff member will be responsible for assisting in maintaining the flow of data from GML and partner sites for instrument health and assisting with the preparation of Observatories data submitted to the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN). This might involve data quality analysis for multiple classes of instruments, using diagnostics to assess instruments, communications, and siting problems. The successful candidate will work with the database manager to implement processing routines required by scientists who are crafting final, scaled, and QC-edited data products and making them available to the general public for scientific use. This will include assisting with algorithm development and evaluation of new atmospheric data products. Assisting with field deployments, including distribution of instruments to sites, site communication, and basic instrumentation and site maintenance is also encouraged.

- Collect, process, and manage meteorological and atmospheric data from ground-based observations
- Support data monitoring operations at 5 international GML Observatories and 14 U.S.-based measurement stations, and field campaign activities, requiring, at times, substantial local and international travel
- Archive and distribute radiation and ancillary data collected and retrieved by the GML Radiation group Global Observatories program
- Develop code to support and streamline data quality assurance activities
- Assist with the development and evaluation of new atmospheric related products
- Support calibration activities as needed before instrument installation at Observatory and campaign field sites
- Help coordinate travel and field logistics and installation of instrumentation and related equipment at field campaigns
- Bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field
- Programming experience, preferably in one or more of these languages: R, Python, C, Java, Matlab, IDL
- Experience with Linux/Unix and shell scripting
- Phenomenal coordination and organizational skills
- Master's degree in Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field
- Experience with QA/QC of atmospheric data
- Experience participating in scientific field programs and experiments
- Direct experience with radiometers and related instrumentation for climate and atmospheric science applications
- Knowledge of calibration science
- Experience working with a database
- Technical lab skills, e.g., soldering and electronics troubleshooting and repair
- Experience handling and processing moderately large scientific data sets
- Experience working with scientific instrumentation
