The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience performing the full range of skilled pipefitting work including the installation, modification, and repair of new and existing piping systems and equipment. This position will work on the campus’ high pressure steam system, therefore experience with high pressure steam systems is preferred.

Position Summary

Plumber - Under general supervision, incumbent performs the full range of skilled plumbing work including the installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler/prevention, and refrigeration related plumbing systems, including automated plumbing systems and as assigned. Work includes the installation of plumbing fixtures and piping in new construction and remodel projects and the maintenance and repair of existing plumbing fixtures and piping including restroom and laboratory fixtures, fire sprinkler systems, and associated piping. Incumbent repairs existing and installs new appliances (water heaters, garbage disposals, kitchen ranges, drinking fountains, dish washers, washing machines, forced air furnaces, etc.).

Pipefitter- Under general supervision, incumbent performs the full range of skilled pipefitting work including the installation, modification, and repair of new and existing piping systems and equipment. The incumbent works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment. Install, modify, and repair systems by setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, installing hangers at proper pitch and elevation, and determining and installing such things as risers, branch outlets, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, and pressure regulators in the combination needed to ensure the proper operation of the systems. Install equipment by planning and completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, determining and placing the equipment at the proper elevations and points in the systems, and joining, sealing, and testing systems and equipment for proper pressures, leak-free joints, and operation.

The incumbent is required to have knowledge of how various piping systems and equipment are installed and operate. For example, the pipefitters must know how relief valves, check valves, pressure regulators, expansion joints, and other pressure supporting and controlling devices are installed and how they operate to control increases and decreases in pressure, flow, circulation, and expansion in the systems.

Objectives – Provide an “Industry Best Practice” preventive maintenance organization to the San Diego State University community.

Expectations – Provide a thorough and accurate accounting of time and materials. Complete all routine work assignments and perform all additional duties as assigned. Incumbent maintains equipment and a safe and clean working environment. Consistent meeting of university needs in a timely and professional manner with increasingly improved skill. Follow-up on every project or task to ensure that all items are completed to the satisfaction of the FS Associate Director. Maintains a responsible attendance record, punctuality and consistent meeting of deadlines. Builds and maintains internal and external customer satisfaction with the products and services offered by the organization. Seeks feedback, is responsive to stakeholders and takes appropriate action for the situation.

Must be able to perform strenuous physical work while using mechanical aptitude and motor coordination. Ability to implement safety procedures, resolve problems and improve safety in the workplace. Works to instill in others the importance of workplace safety rules and regulations and takes appropriate actions. Ability to conduct hazard assessments, address hazards appropriately and apply controls as appropriate to address/mitigate hazards; promptly follow-up on health and safety risks, taking appropriate action(s) and provide necessary reports and documentation.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

A combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber’s apprenticeship program.

License/Certification Required

California Driver’s License is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed journeyman-level pipefitter or welder or successful completion of state certified apprenticeship program or equivalent relative craft
  • Certified in T3 brazing
  • 5 years industrial experience
  • 5 years’ experience in pipefitting and/or welding
  • Prior experience performing pipefitting system operations and maintenance on specialized research facilities; laboratories, engineering facilities, testing labs, environmental chambers.
  • Prior experience with the operation and maintenance of Fire Life Safety systems including dry and wet fire suppression, sprinkler fitter experience, fire pumps and control systems.
  • Specialized Skills

  • Ability to select type and size of pipe and related materials and equipment, according to job specifications. Able to select equipment and plan piping layouts, assembly, and welding, apply knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal, weld shrinkage and welding techniques.
  • Knowledge of the tools, principles, methods, and techniques used in the pipefitting and welding trades.
  • Ability to weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead position.
  • Ability to cut and bevel pipe using cutting torches, saws, threading machines and pipe cutting machine.
  • Ability to fabricate, install, position, or connect components, parts, finished products, or instruments for testing purposes, including hydrotesting.
  • Advanced working knowledge of the various sizes and grades of standard materials employed in an industrial plant such as bolts, gaskets, fittings and valves.
  • Advanced ability to measure accurately, layout work, cut, straighten, bevel, thread and fit pipe
  • Ability to determine mitered fittings and rolling offsets.
  • Knowledge of the ANSI, ASME, and PFI codes and standards.
  • Advanced working knowledge of various piping system components such as valves and fittings.
  • Ability to inspect worksites to determine presence of obstructions plans sequence of installation to avoid obstructions and activities of other crafts.
  • Experience with bolting, clamping and welding together metal components of products such as piping systems, plate, pipe and tube or structural shapes, using arc and arc gas welding equipment.
  • Ability to use, interpret and care for the tools and equipment commonly employed on an industrial project such as cutting torches, threading machines, grinder, beveling machines, round-up clamps, etc.
  • Compensation and Benefits

    Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $6,148 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,742 - $7,414 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
