Physical Requirements

Lifting, pushing, and/or pulling objects up to and possibly over 50lbs; Standing or walking with objects up to 25lbs; Sitting at computer workstation for extended periods; Repetitive motion.

May be exposed to loud noises, fumes, confined spaces, and/or weather/temperature extremes while on a job-site(s) or traveling to/from various job sites.

Shift

7:00am – 3:30pm (Monday – Friday)*

[Note: Utilities Systems Supervisors maintain 24/7 plant operations.]
7:00am – 3:00pm (Sunday – Saturday)

3:00pm – 11:00pm (Sunday – Saturday)*
11:00pm – 7:00am (Saturday – Friday)*

*Hours of work and task assignments may vary dependent upon situational factors; emergencies; crisis management; and/or weather-related factors requiring night(s), weekend(s), and holiday(s) response.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Utilities Systems Superintendent, this position provides work management and administrative direction for operating and maintaining all facilities, systems and equipment related to the production and distribution of utilities, including heating/cooling and energy management for the University campus; Plans, organizes, sequences, schedules, and assigns daily maintenance work load based on work priority and skill of personnel; Administers the start, stop, and operation of cooling equipment and systems; Administers the operation of natural gas and coal boilers, auxiliaries, controls, and emissions; Monitors operating conditions and authorizes adjustments to equipment to ensure maximum efficiencies; Analyzes data and reconfigures operations as necessary to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient services; Oversees operating and maintenance of boilers, chillers, pumps, valves, piping, controls, and fans; Oversees servicing, repairing, replacing, adjusting, balancing and testing equipment, including replacing pump seals, sump pumps, and steam traps, as well as aligning couplings, balancing fans, and performing minor pipe repairs; Administers and coordinates the completion of special projects; Inspects equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors, problems, or defects; and Investigates abnormal operating events or equipment failures to determine cause, makes adjustments, repairs, and/or modifications, as required.

In addition, the Utilities Systems Supervisor directly supervises and trains assigned Utilities Systems Technicians; Ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of high pressure boilers, chillers, and auxiliary equipment; Ensures departmental and contractor compliance with all federal and state statutory codes and regulations as well as safety and environmental standards; Monitors cost center allocations; obtains and reviews relevant cost information, constraints, compliance, etc., to ensure overall quality compliance and cost containment; and Models and promotes excellent customer service for internal and external customers.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

MS Windows/Office; SAP; KRONOS

Driver’s License — Preferred

Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques used in the operation and maintenance of heating/cooling plants and systems.

Knowledge of the types and uses of chemicals used in water treatment.

Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques used in firing and operating high or low-pressure coal or gas fired boilers and their auxiliary equipment.
