Background:
The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) is the United States' national institute on Smart Manufacturing ("SM"), ensuring the power of change and innovation is at the fingertips of everyone who touches manufacturing. CESMII is accelerating Smart Manufacturing (SM) adoption through the integration of advanced sensors, data analytics, platforms and controls to radically improve efficiency, precision, performance and energy productivity. CESMII is the Home of Smart Manufacturing, transforming US manufacturing by dramatically reducing the cost & complexity of using real-time data from operations to drive revenue growth and reduce operating costs to improve profitability.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, CA, CESMII brings over $140 million in committed public private investment through a consortium of partners from across industry, academia and non-profit entities. CESMII is the 5th Institute sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the 9th out of 14 in the national Manufacturing USA network of institutes, each with a specialized focus to improve manufacturing competitiveness in the US. CESMII's program and administration is with the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and with HQ office in Los Angeles, CA.

In addition to headquarters, CESMII has a national network of Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center (SMIC) partners. The SMIC's create highly visible, credible, high value, regional 'Lighthouse' extensions of CESMII. The SMIC's allow CESMII to have a National Reach, while maintaining regional attention to membership growth, satisfaction and retention. These SMIC partners are subrecipients to the CESMII/UCLA cooperative agreement with DOE. Additionally, CESMII oversees funded project work conducted by partners that are subrecipients to the CESMII/UCLA cooperative agreement with DOE. CESMII staff and all subrecipients must abide by the compliance aspects of the CESMII/UCLA cooperative agreement with DOE, which includes status reporting, financial reporting, conflict of interest, non-disclosure of confidential information, intellectual property, and export control policies.

CESMII is a membership-based consortium, wherein the members agree to the terms and conditions of the CESMII Membership Agreement. The compliance aspects of the Membership Agreement, and the companion CESMII Bylaws & Plans document, include conflict of interest, intellectual property, non-disclosure of confidential information, and export control policies.

Additionally, CESMII has appointees that participate in its Governance Board, Standing Committees, Advisory Committees, and other working groups. These appointees must abide by the compliance aspects of their Board/Committee appointment agreements, which can include bylaws, conflict of interest, non-disclosure of confidential information, intellectual property, and export control policies.

In 15 of the 16 medical specialty areas examined, UCLA Medical Center ranked in the top 20.
