The Barbara Davis Center – Adult Clinic has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Health Care Technician I position.

Positions in this series provide support in delivering psychiatric, developmentally disabled, special education, or nursing care and therapeutic treatment to an assigned client population. Duties include supervising clients in a variety of settings; observing and reporting client behavior, physical condition, reactions to medications; participating as a team member in group therapy sessions; performing preventative and practical nursing procedures, such as taking and recording client’s vital signs; teaching basic living skills, hygiene, and social skills and explaining various routines and expectations; providing immediate crisis intervention when required; and maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment. Those positions with required licensure may administer prescribed treatments and medications under the supervision of a registered nurse. Some positions may work in security settings where the positions follow policies and procedures to ensure the safety of themselves and others.

Nature of Work

This is an opening for a full-time (40 hours per week) position at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.   The person will assist with front check-in duties at the adult diabetes clinic, including taking vitals and the medical history of patients. 

Supervision Received

This position reports to the Clinic Front Desk Supervisor, Olivia Llamas, and the Director of the Adult Clinic, Satish Garg. The position is part of the adult clinic team and the employee will be expected to assist the staff members within that section.

Supervision Provided

No supervision of others is required of this position.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is position requires interest in patient care and medical research, the ability to be self-directed, detail-oriented, and adaptable in a high-intensity environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required as well. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Front desk duties, including answering phones and scheduling appointments in EMR (EPIC)
  • Operating phone, fax and computer (Microsoft Office)
  • Collecting, verifying and processing insurance, referral and billing information
  • Rooming patients and preparing exam rooms for patients
  • Organizing and filing patient charts
  • Taking vital signs on patients (ht, wt and blood pressure)
  • Taking basic patient histories and updating medications in the EMR
  • Assist Adult Clinic providers with obtaining Insurance Prior Authorizations for medications and medical devices (insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors)
  • Taking prescriptions requests from patients/Pharmacies and entering into EMR (EPIC) for approval by provider
  • Working with Insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies to understand preferred formulary medications and obtaining Prior Authorizations when necessary.
  • Using on-line Prior Authorization systems such as Covermymeds
  • Provides good customer service to patients and pharmacies
  • Downloading insulin pumps, glucose meters and other devices used for diabetes care.
  • Practicing good HIPAA compliance
  • Other duties as assigned
 

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or the hiring range) for this position starts at $35,652 and is commensurate with skills and experience.This position may be eligible for overtime compensation.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications

Minimum of a high school diploma required

Preferred Qualifications 

1-year work experience in a medical setting preferred.

Experience working with medical professionals is desirable.

Medical Assistant experience required

Electronic Medical Record and medical terminology knowledge highly desirable

Knowledge and/or experience with Type 1 Diabetes.

Working Conditions

Position requires Monday-Friday hours based on clinic appointment schedule.  Start time will range between 6:30 am and 8:00 am.   The position will be located at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes on the University of Colorado at Denver Anschutz campus in Aurora, CO.
