Position Summary:

The Gustavsson Lab in the Department of Chemistry at Rice University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to develop novel single-molecule and super-resolution fluorescence imaging strategies for cellular imaging applications within biophysics and biomedicine. Experience in optics and microscopy is required. More information on the Gustavsson Lab’s research can be found at: https://gustavssonlab.rice.edu.

Education Required:

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate

Major/Discipline:

Physics, chemistry, bioengineering, or related field

Experience Required:

No experience required

Experience Preferred:

- Single-molecule and/or super-resolution imaging and instrumentation development
- Programming
- Microfabrication
- Microfluidics
- Biophysics

Skills Required:

- Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection, and analyses within microscopy and cellular imaging
- Knowledge of the concepts and principles in optics and microscopy; Ability to use optics and microscopy equipment and align optical systems
- Knowledge of how to write scholarly papers based on ongoing research and how to submit them to journals for publication
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, oral presentation skills, and a desire to develop these to a high level
- Excellent scientific and numerical skills with meticulous attention to details and accuracy
- Ability to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment and ability to work independently and professionally with minimal supervision and direction
- Ability to troubleshoot an experiment as necessary; Ability to maintain quality and safety control standards
- Critical thinking, organization and time management skills

Physical Demands:

- Requires manual dexterity for pipetting, aligning optics, and other aspects of experimental protocols
- Requires working at a computer for extended periods of time (up to eight hours per day)
- Moderate lifting and carrying experimental materials and supplies

Working Conditions:

- Receive annual safety trainings by the university, and will be supplied with personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed
- Shared office space (separate from the lab) and a work laptop
- Occasionally work evenings and/or weekends due to the demands of the research activities

Essential Functions:

- Documents, analyzes, and maintains research data, including images, analysis code, and protocols
- Publishes and presents research findings within the fields of microscopy and biophysics
- Mentors, oversees, and/or trains junior research team members

- Supports project management and collaboration across institutions or disciplines
- May monitor research budget
- May assist in the administration of research project
- Provides academic services (ie. teaching classes) to the department as required
- Performs all other duties as assigned
