21-Sep-2020 Close All Job SummaryThe Office of Strategic Relations at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Spokesperson. This position will serve as a university spokesperson for contacts with the public, press, and electronic media for situations that are critical and/or urgent in nature, provide public relations and media counsel to key administrators, advance the university’s strategic goals with the media, and assist with all emergency communication efforts. The spokesperson will also write and edit public relations materials.
This position will produce and disseminate information in accordance to university goals, objectives, and priorities, under the direction of the chief spokesperson. They will work in a collaborative environment to provide accurate information on critical, confidential, and high-impact issues to the institution.

  • Respond to and follow through on requests for information from the media and the public, determining appropriate, accurate response and appropriate university contacts for response.
  • Develop response plans for known and anticipated requests for information from media outlets.
  • Work with campus partners to understand the media relations aspects of major initiatives, announcements, issues, and other matters of public interest. Establish relationships with campus partners to stay informed on topics of public interest. Develop and implement communication plans.
  • Support campus partners with communications needs in relation to meeting requests for information or interviews. Conduct media training with campus partners to prepare them for interviews with local, state and national media outlets.
  • Develop university communications and responses to media inquiries in emergency/crisis situations. In coordination with the chief spokesperson, manage the university’s communications response to emergencies as needed.
  • Support effective response strategies, including response to crisis situations requiring 24/7 attention and intense media/public scrutiny, and articulate the university's position via personal interviews and written responses.
  • Serve on emergency communications groups and committees to advise on media relations standard methodologies during immediate and long term crises.
  • Participate in a shared on-call rotation for coverage of spokesperson responsibilities during weekends and holidays.
  • Coordinate media strategies for the university, including identifying story ideas, noting trends in higher education news, and promoting the university’s profile through stories, articles, and publications.
  • Research and synthesize sophisticated facts into clear public positions and support materials, such as briefing sheets/fact sheets, news releases and editorials.
  • Coordinate and deliver timely and clear media responses about the University of Colorado Boulder on issues of interest to the media and the public.
  • Gather facts, data, and background information in support of developing communication plans and strategies, presentations, editorials and other communication deliverables.
  • Support emergency/crisis communication planning and response.

What We Can Offer
  • The anticipated starting salary for this position is $70,000, commensurate with experience.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, or other related field.
  • At least five years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified or equivalent combination of education and experience.
What You Will Need
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to capture, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences.
  • The ability to present a calm and focused presence in print and broadcast interviews and to articulate complicated policies and issues in clear and careful common language.
  • Experience communicating with the press and other media. The ability to write and edit effectively in Associated Press style.
  • Solid understanding of local and regional media contacts and/or a shown ability to develop such relationships quickly.
  • Sophisticated writing, communication, and presentation skills, to include ability to communicate effectively on-camera.
  • Ability to provide effective advice and counsel on strategic and/or critical communication issues and to exercise effective judgment.
  • Ability to write executive-level communications for internal and external audiences.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and standards for the management and disclosure of public information.
  • Knowledge of journalism, public relations and general communications principles and practices.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Seven years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Experience as a spokesperson in a higher education setting.
  • Experience or certification in crisis or reputation management or emergency communications.
