Departmental Overview

Digital Learning Services (DLS) is a unit within Research,Teaching and Learning that provides design, production, and delivery services for online and hybrid/blended courses as well as academic technology services campus-wide. We blend our expertise in digital learning with UC Berkeley's broader strategic plan, goals and values. Responsibilities

The Manager of the Learning Environments and Tools (LET) team within Digital Learning Services is responsible for the leadership, supervision, coaching and mentoring of employees and their impactful work in the design, delivery, support, and management of services and existing technologies as well as emerging technologies to enhance the current ecosystem. The existing portfolio of academic technologies and services include Canvas, Kaltura, Zoom, Online Evaluation of Courses, Turnitin, Gradescope, Berkeley Online Advising and Blackboard's Ally. The Manager works with colleagues in RTL and the UC Berkeley community as well as the UC System and peer institutions across common goals in service of instructors and students.

Role:
In this role you will manage a team of eight and the work related to services including design and management; metrics analysis and reporting; continuous improvement; and service support resources and activities - documentation, training, consultation, ticket handling/resolution, customer service, and coordination with central IT's tier one technical support team. You will develop service strategies, roadmaps and capabilities to achieve objectives related to existing and emerging academic technologies. Your collaboration with supervisors and staff from various teams and units including Instructional Design and Media; Development; Center for Teaching and Learning; and Enterprise Applications as well as other central and divisional IT teams is important to successfully accomplish objectives. Understanding how systems and teams function within Berkeley and improving their connections in support of the technical functions of teaching and learning is essential. As a successful manager, you can analyze and understand technical specifications and functions to manage the portfolio of services, while also clearly translating to audiences of varied technical experience and understanding. You hold the skills needed to analyze existing processes, workflows, practices and systems and you enjoy identifying opportunities for improvements and efficiencies. You are a successful communicator and listener, and you successfully lead through uncertainty and ambiguity when necessary. Kindness, adaptability, compassion and courage are key qualities for success in this role. You are comfortable giving and receiving feedback, particularly when difficult.

The position is remote until campus resumes normal, in-person operations. While a portion of work from home is an option after normal operations resume, in-person work at the department offices and on campus is required.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced experience and skills managing technical teams serving instructors and students in the effective use of cloud-based academic technologies for teaching and learning at a higher education institution.
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience managing teams who provide services for Canvas, Kaltura (or other enterprise video platforms), and Zoom for instructional purposes.
  • Advanced experience with methods and practices of the following to manage a portfolio of academic technology IT systems and support services: project management, student/instructor user experience, application programming/development, systems administration and operation.
  • Experience managing cloud-based academic technologies and their administrators.
  • Experience working with development teams to customize and extend platforms and applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of policy and regulations governing teaching and learning technologies to include users data privacy protection and equitable access.
  • Working/broad understanding of theories, concepts, and best practices of instructional design and pedagogy.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, coaching/mentoring, and conflict resolution skills pertaining to supervision and management responsibilities.
  • Skilled communicator, collaborator, and listener.
  • Demonstrated application of the following skill sets of emotional intelligence: self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with learning/user analytics and data retrieval.
  • Experience with Kaltura.
  • Experience with 1 or more of the following technologies: Turnitin, Gradescope, Student Response Systems, and student evaluations.
  • Experience customizing ITIL or IT Service Management practices for higher education academic technology environments.
