Departmental Overview

As a national collegiate leader, University Health Services (UHS) is a comprehensive campus-based health center providing fully accredited medical and mental health care, education, a major medical insurance plan, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. Responsibilities

This position provides direct behavioral health assessment, intervention, and case management within fast-paced Primary Care clinics to optimize whole-person health and wellness that supports the academic success of a highly diverse, multicultural student population. Working collaboratively with colleagues from diverse clinical training backgrounds, performs psychological evaluation, diagnosis, psychoeducation, counseling and case management with individuals across a broad spectrum of developmental and psychological concerns that may affect physical, academic and personal functioning.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Performs assessment, diagnosis, behavioral interventions, motivational interviewing, brief psychotherapy and case management on a full range of cases including crisis counseling and high-risk concerns. Works collaboratively with primary care providers, clinic nurses, medical assistants, and individuals from other clinical units to provide culturally competent care for a diverse student population. Professionally responsible for the soundness and validity of recommendations, services, and referrals but is expected to seek advice from senior specialists on unusual or uniquely complex client responses or on problems outside their area of expertise. Maintains a visible presence during clinic operating hours and provides timely feedback to referring clinical providers.
  • Gathers, analyzes, prepares, summarizes and monitors the status and progress of individual cases and projects and may participate in the training of lower-level professionals and paraprofessionals. Maintains current knowledge of University Health Services, campus, and community resources. Implements related business processes.
  • Functions as a resource and may provide clinical guidance and oversight to lower level professional staff.

  • Staff Development - includes work on committees and assignments that enable the staff member to stretch and grow, along with formal and informal coaching and mentoring and regular training, including conference attendance.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge and experience with providing psychological diagnoses, brief interventions, and case management services to university students. Experience providing behavioral health interventions in a medical setting preferred.
  • Able to rapidly provide these services while working in a fast-paced environment where interruptions may be frequent and task-shifting.
  • Broad skills and competencies associated with providing multi-cultural counseling services and experience with communities underserved in mental health care.
  • Strong familiarity with a wide range of psychological interventions including Motivational Interviewing.
  • Experience and ability to work as a member of a clinical team with diverse clinical training.
  • Maintains an intervention focus oriented by client goals including harm reduction.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner.
  • Flexibility and willingness to accommodate client needs and colleague requests for support. Comfortable with a varied clinical schedule.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of diagnostic/psychological testing methodologies.
  • Ability to conduct complex analysis and develop and present recommendations and course of treatment.
  • Experience in the use of electronic/medical records systems; must be computer literate.


Education/Training:
  • Doctorate in clinical psychology or counseling and completion of an APA-approved doctoral program and doctoral internship.


Licenses or certifications:
  • Current, valid license in California as a psychologist, or license in another state with expectation of California within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years experience providing mental health care to university students.
  • Three years experience providing mental health care in a medical setting.

Salary & Benefits

Per diem appointment not eligible for UC benefits plan.

Other Information
