The NC State College of Education leads the way in North Carolina in preparing professionals, conducting research, and engaging communities to improve educational outcomes for all learners across the state and beyond. The college is composed of three academic departments: Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education; and Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, with approximately 124 faculty members and 92 support and professional staff. The college’s 1,700 undergraduate and graduate students study across 60-plus degree programs that deliver highly-engaged and personalized academic experiences that prepare them to lead in the field of education. The college is also home to the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research.

The Department of STEM Education emphasizes exemplary teaching, scholarship, and service in the context of a university education. With a primary emphasis on improving schools and society, the Department prepares quality educators for middle, secondary, and post-secondary school science, technology, engineering, mathematics statistics, graphic communications, as well as educators who work and study learning in informal STEM settings. The Department offers programs preparing professionals for leadership at master’s and doctoral levels. Specifically there are six undergraduate tracks in secondary mathematics education, including double degrees with mathematics and statistics. At the graduate level, we have a M.S. and Ph.D. in mathematics and statistics education, online master’s degrees (M.Ed. and M.A.T.) and a 12-hour graduate certificate program. We are consistently ranked as a top producer of doctoral graduates in mathematics education and lead NC in producing high school mathematics teachers.

The Department of STEM Education has approximately 240 undergraduates and more than 175 graduate students in certificate, masters, and doctoral programs. Faculty in STEM Education currently direct approximately $25 million in sponsored projects and have close ties with other units in mathematics, engineering, computer science and science. Essential Job Duties

The STEM Education Department invites applications for a tenure track-faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education. We desire a colleague who addresses important challenges that face students, teachers, and schools/colleges, and conducts research related to the teaching and learning of mathematics at upper secondary (advanced high school courses) and post-secondary levels (community college and universities). The candidate’s research may focus on: 1) the learning and teaching of specific advanced mathematics or statistics content (e.g., college algebra, precalculus, calculus, linear algebra, abstract algebra, geometry, proofs, probability, statistics and data science); 2) preparation of teachers for secondary and post-secondary contexts and diverse communities; 3) the design of innovative curricula, tools, and assessments at the upper secondary or collegiate level; or 4) examining ways to promote student success to increase the number and diversity of students who pursue careers in STEM.

The candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, social justice and collaboration. The candidate also should have a commitment to secondary and post-secondary teacher preparation and use of technology to support teaching and learning. There are opportunities to collaborate with faculty within the College of Education as well as mathematics and statistics faculty in the College of Sciences.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Teach undergraduate and graduate pre-service teachers in the secondary mathematics teacher preparation programs.
• Teach graduate courses in master’s and Ph.D. programs in Mathematics and Statistics Education, including mathematics courses for teachers and interdisciplinary and methodology courses at the doctoral level in STEM Education and in the College of Education.
• Conduct and publish research focused on teaching and learning in upper secondary and/or undergraduate mathematics education.
• Recruit, advise, and mentor undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students, including dissertation and thesis research.
• Pursue and obtain external funding for research and development activities.
• Provide service and leadership to the program area, department, college, university, and professional organizations.
• Participate in outreach and extension activities; especially in low-wealth communities, and collaborate with faculty within the college and across the university.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Perform other duties as assigned by the department head.

Minimum Education/Experience

Doctoral degree in Mathematics Education or related field and relevant teaching experience in mathematics or statistics in grades 9-16.

A record of scholarship and external funding commensurate with experience.

Departmental Required Skills

A demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, diversity, social justice, and collaboration.

Scholarship and successful record for external funding in Mathematics Education commensurate with experience.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

At least three years experience teaching in a mathematics and statistics department and/or teacher education program and/or in grades 6-12.

A research focus on issues in secondary and post-secondary teacher preparation is preferred.

A Master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, or applied mathematics
